CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

The Present

Chloe and Dan had watched the van pull off, leaving a giant ball of smoke and the remains of Dan’s car. They jumped up from their hiding place, but a couple of small explosions caused them to take cover again.

When they were at a safe distance, Chloe removed her phone and dialled 999, asking for police and the fire brigade. Dan lay on the ground in disbelief.

‘Motherfuckers. They’re going to pay. Motherfu…’

‘Dan. We could have died. Forget about the car for a minute.’

He looked at his girlfriend. ‘What now? How are we going to get back? We’re stranded here.’ He was pacing up and down, shouting at the top of his voice.
