I had broken out. No one was ever going to attack me when I slept again. It was unacceptable. It had taken longer than I expected to walk to the Walmart we had passed on the way to the grocery store, but I arrived just as the sun came up.

I had to hurry. I didn’t know exactly how far I would be able to go before my GPS ankle monitor alerted authorities, but I reasoned authorities had to be safer than Joe. In the meantime, I had to move fast. I picked up my pace.

The technology section was at the back of the store. I veered into the craft section and picked up a pair of scissors. I casually carried them to the tech section and smiled winningly at the worker who sat playing on his phone. He glanced at me and went back to what he was doing.

I grabbed a track phone and reloadable phone card off the shelf and kept walking right into the bathroom that was two aisles over. I went straight into a stall. I cut the packaging open and dropped it into the small sanitary trash can in the stall. I loaded the phone card into the tiny flip phone. I watched with anticipation as the phone came to life.

“Okay,” I pulled my arm back. “I’m coming out.”

“That’s right you are. You got an armed Marshal waiting for you outside this bathroom,” the officer tapped my ankle monitor with her foot. “Did you really think you’d get very far?”

“No?” I asked.

“Then why even try it?” she asked.

I stopped short before we left the bathroom and put a hand on the wall so she couldn’t yank me along anymore. Now was my chance. “Because that Marshal is an abusive asshole,” I whispered to her.

The woman snorted and grabbed my arm again. She didn’t believe me. I was stunned silent. I felt all my hope became trampled beneath the officer’s shoes.

Joe was standing outside the door with a gun on his hip. He nodded to the police officer. “Thank you, ma’am, I’ll take it from here.”

I crossed my hands over my chest and looked around Joe. There was no one else here and the police officer apparently didn’t believe my story. I stifled a sigh feeling utterly powerless. I had no choice but to go back with Joe.

“I’ll give
