Chuck

“You know what? You’re exhausted. Let me make you something to eat,” I say.

“Okay, th—” he cuts off as the doorbell chimes. We look at each other wide-eyed. “Were you expecting anyone?”

“Um. No. Let me see who it is.” Nathaniel’s arm shoots out and his hand grips my forearm. “Chuck, I don’t—”

He’s cut off again at the sound of Julian yelling through the door. “Chuck? Are you asleep? Let us in.”

Nathaniel’s hold on my arm immediately loosens as he shakes his head. I grin at him. “I should’ve known it was Julian. I was supposed to go to his house after a nap, so he probably got worried.” Glancing at my watch, I’m shocked how much time had passed while I listened to Nathaniel tell his story. “At the very least, I should’ve called by now.”

Hustling to the door, I crack it open enough for a smiling Julian to hold out two pizza boxes toward me. “There you are. When you hadn’t called, Vaughn suggested we surprise you and come here instead.” Looking over his shoulder, I see his boyfriend, who’s also one of the owners of the construction company I work for in the summer. While Julian is all smiles, Vaughn’s face is pulled tight, and the smile he sends me looks strained.

“Oh, I’m not sure now is a good time.”

Julian’s smile instantly falters, but before I can think of an excuse, I hear Nathaniel call from over my shoulder, “Let them in, Chuckles. It’s okay.”

Julian’s eyes widen in disbelief, but I notice Vaughn only looks wearier, not shocked. “Come on in.” I step back so they can pass through the door into the house.

I close the door behind us, checking the lock twice. Bernie would never think to come here, but the threat feels real. Julian puts the pizza boxes I never grabbed from him on the coffee table and glances quickly at Vaughn; they exchange a look that shows they’re really starting to understand each other in that weird psychic-link way that couples get. They’ve only been together a few months, but in that time, they’ve gone through a lot.

Vaughn walks over and grabs Julian’s hand to tug him behind him to the couch where they drop next to each other. Nathaniel eyes them warily, but waits for them to speak. Vaughn says, “Before I say anything else, I want you to know that I’m glad to see you’re okay.” Nathaniel nods at him. “But I have to say I’m pretty pissed off that you’d come to Chuck’s place and put him in danger. What the fuck were you thinking, Nathaniel?”

“Hey!” Crossing the living room between them, I sit on the arm of the recliner Nathaniel’s sitting in and rest my hand on his shoulder. “Back off, Vaughn. I’m glad he knew he could come here. He’s been there for me quite a few times since stuff started with Julian.”

“Listen, Chuck. I know he saved the day with Julian. And I’ll never be able to express how
