ELIZA

Eliza created the coziest set-up she could for Ankk.

Bitty had wanted him in the living room, but she managed to convince her to put him in bed so they could prop up the hurt leg.

Now Bitty was in the kitchen activating a freeze-wrap. Hopefully, it would ease the man’s pain and swelling a little.

“Clem and I are just going to go round up the ponies,” she called to her friend on the way out the back door.

She was really hoping to help Troy figure out how to get Ankk home. The Bergalian was a massive man, and badly injured.

However, she was just in time to catch a glimpse of Troy from behind, carrying Ankk up to the front of the house like his weight was nothing.

“Unbelievable,” she whispered to Clem as she headed off to get the horses.

Clem smacked her lips twice, as if in agreement.

She had prepared herself for a fight, but the ponies were easy to catch. They liked Eliza, and correctly suspected that she had a pocketful of treats for them.

Unfortunately, it looked like there was a break in the fence, so she had no choice but to halter them and tie their rope to a tree.

“Once I’m sure Ankk is set up, I’ll be back,” she promised them.

She headed back into the house, washed her hands at the kitchen sink and walked back to the bedroom to see how things were going.

Troy and Bitty were seated at kitchen chairs that they must have dragged in. Ankk was lying back in bed, the hurt leg elevated on a bunch of pillows and ensconced in a freeze wrap.

The three of them were talking in an urgent matter.

“Hi,” Eliza said awkwardly.

“That was quick,” Troy said, looking up at her. “You saw the break in the fence, right?”

“Yes, I put on their halters and roped them on the big tree,” she told him. We’ll repair the fence later.”

He nodded, giving her a significant look that made her think about that break, and how it looked a little too clean to be natural.

“We were just talking about the run to the mines that Ankk was planning to take tomorrow,” Troy went on. “I’d like to go on his behalf.”

Eliza felt a warm rush of pleasure, as if Troy had just found a way to tell her he was a good man, in spite of his belligerent attitude this afternoon.

“I’ll come too,” she decided. “If the Fythwates don’t mind babysitting?”

“Oh, dear, we’d love to,” Bitty said with an ecstatic smile.

Even Ankk chuckled through his pain. “The little one can keep me out of trouble while I heal up.”

“Too dangerous,” Troy said suddenly, his deep voice undercutting the air of merriment.

“Everything here is dangerous,” Eliza said, shrugging. “And if my land won’t pay, I’ve got to learn to make this run sometime.”

“Little lady’s got a point,” Ankk said thoughtfully. “This is a good chance to get your feet wet. It’s the short run, just to the first encampment and back.”

Troy frowned and his eyes flashed angrily, but he kept his mouth shut.
