Chapter Fourteen

She knew as soon as he walked into her office that something was up. It was the grin on his face. The dimples bracketing his mouth were never more prominent than they were now.

“What?” Callie narrowed her eyes at Greyson.

“Margaret just called. She wants me to attend that function with you.” He stopped in front of her desk. “Looks like we’ll have another chance to try out our dancing moves together.”

She dropped her eyes back to the report on her desk. “It’s a business thing. I was going to mention it anyway.”

He laughed. “Margaret told me you’d say that. She also said that she’s still concerned about Elliot presenting an award to Felix Montano.”

Callie sighed.

“She assumed you’d already told me all about it,” he said. “Maybe you could tell me the rest now?”

“The actual award ceremony is still quite a way off. She’s hoping we’ll be able to hear some of the rumors at this upcoming charity function. It will give us a chance to interact with some of the people involved in the commercial fishing industry, though there will be others there as well.” Callie leaned back in her chair. “I hope it does help. I haven’t found anything yet that supports her concerns.”

“You look like that bothers you.” He crossed over to the doorway between their two offices and leaned against the doorframe.

“That’s the thing. It does.” She turned to her computer. “My mother is rarely wrong when it comes to things like this.”

“Like knowing what’s in the wind?” he asked.

“Exactly. She’s fierce when it comes to protecting someone she loves. She keeps track of the people she and Elliot associate with. She doesn’t want any hint of anything bad to touch his good name.”

Greyson rubbed the spot between his eyes as he considered the possible ramifications. “He has done a lot of good in the world.”

“He has.” Callie was relieved that Greyson seemed to understand. “She doesn’t want all of that ruined by inadvertently getting involved in something illegal.”

He nodded his agreement. “What do we have on the Montano Fishing Fleet so far?”

She turned back to her computer. “The owner is Felix Montano. He’s sixty-three years old. I’ve tailed him once already. He attended a gathering supporting local commercial fishing. From what I saw, he was well-liked by everyone there.”

“It’s not unusual for someone involved in illegal activities to be liked,” he pointed out.

Callie was typing as he spoke. She motioned to her monitor when she pulled up another article.

“His name is tied to a lot of the different local fisheries. He promotes research and sometimes even funds it. He’s active with initiatives involving sustainable fishing practices.”

“All of which doesn’t support Margaret’s concerns,” Greyson murmured. “Could she be wrong this time?”

Callie gave a half shrug. “It’s possible.”

“But you don’t think it’s probable?” He glanced at the time.

She gave a wry smile. “No, I don’t. There’s something here. I’m just not seeing it yet.”

“Then we need to look at some of his employees,” Greyson said.

“Agreed.”

“It’s possible that someone who is working for him is causing the gossip Margaret is hearing.
