Chapter 24

January 3nd Mid-morning

Antonio Martinez’s flight on the Volaris Airbus from Mexico City into the Cancun airport touched down on time, taxiing towards the terminal. He hadn’t been back to Isla Mujeres since he was a teenager. A career move for his math-professor father had taken the family to Mexico City just as Antonio had graduated from the federally funded Secundaria Technica. His dad wanted him to follow in his footsteps, but for Antonio teaching seemed too tame.

He, Carlos, Diego and Pedro had been teenage punks on Isla. They had engaged in petty theft and experimented with some of the milder forms of drugs until Pedro’s Tio put a stop to their illegal behaviour. That was when he had decided that he wanted to be a federal police officer instead.

Antonio’s job had brought him on business to Cancun a few years ago, but he hadn’t had the time to visit the island. It wasn’t the best of circumstances for his homecoming, but he was intrigued to see the changes that had happened in the last twenty-something years.

When the Fasten Seatbelt light turned off, he stood and reached to open the overhead bin pulling down his soft-sided travel bag. As he reached for the bag, his left arm instinctively held the front of his casual jacket closed, ensuring the empty holster remained concealed under the garment. Wearing jeans and sturdy boots, he looked like any other average working man returning home from a construction job in another city. Antonio glanced at his seat-mate, a woman who wasn’t nearly tall enough to reach her own bag. “May I help you, abuela?” he asked the older woman, politely calling her grandmother.

“Si gracias,” she flashed a wide sparkly grin displaying her silver encased front teeth. “Mine is the small blue one.”

Antonio smiled at the diminutive woman. Her silver-streaked black hair hung past her waist in two fat braids. She was dressed in a black blouse and black skirt, intricately decorated with embroidered birds, flowers and symbols. A colourful sash was tied around her tiny waist. She probably lived in the high mountainous state of Chiapas, on the border between the Mexican state of Oaxaca and the country of Guatemala. It was an impoverished state with very little land suitable for agriculture. But the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas with its historic buildings and cathedral was one of his favourite locations to take his wife, Luisa, for a long weekend getaway, leaving their five children in the care of their indulgent grandparents. The citizens of Chiapas who had a little money often chose to keep their wealth close by, in the form of silver teeth.

“Have a good day, Abuela,” he said handing her the bag and allowing her to step in front of him as the line began to more forward exiting the plane. As soon as he cleared the doorway of the plane, he identified himself to airport security, advising them he had his personal Glock 17 GEN 4 pistol in his carryon bag and would be arming himself as soon as he stepped outside the main entrance.
