A NIGHT IN THE LIFE OF PETER RILEY, EXPRESSED IN THE FORMAT OF A FILM COMMENTARY BY THE DIRECTOR OF THE IMAGINARY MOVIE MADE ABOUT HIS LIFE

In this scene we really wanted to demonstrate that the further involved Peter got into his work and his videos, the more detached he sort of became from the world that was around him. Of course, since there isn’t any dialogue in this whole scene, we had to use the space and the lighting to get the right sort of mood and say the things that we wanted to say nonverbally.

To do this we kept Peter’s apartment dark, but you can see that there’s this cone of light emanating from the monitor where he works, which is really the only source of light in the scene. The idea here was that his whole world basically exists inside this machine, and everything else in the material world has faded into darkness. Now the night sky and the partial skyline of the city that you can see out his window there, that was all real, but it was altered in post-production so that any of the offices and apartments that had their lights on were made dark. We kept the stars in the sky though, it was a really clear night when we were shooting, which isn’t always the case in the city, so I was glad we got all those stars in the shot. I considered having those darkened out too, but I thought there was something nice or a little poetic about still having a source of untouchable, far away light in his life that he could look up to.

You can see that not only is Peter’s apartment very clean, but it’s also very sparsely furnished and decorated. Again, I wanted his home to look and feel as if it wasn’t properly lived in. I wanted it to be obvious that he never hosted dinners or had people over, and that he himself never really inhabited any of these spaces aside from his workstation which is much busier and more cluttered with mugs, scribbled notes, and equipment. If you think back to the scene from earlier in the film when Peter was living with Justin, you might remember that their apartment was designed to feel much more alive. Not only was it lit much brighter, but it was messier, there were plates left on the dinner table, there were more visual cues to sort of indicate that he was very much present in the real, physical world back then. We don’t call direct attention to it in this shot, but if you look at the wall above his computer you will notice that Peter has the ‘Best Actor’ award that he won in high school hung proudly, as if he still invests a part of himself in the accommodation and in his identity as a performer.

One of the common problems that I notice with new or inexperienced screenwriters and filmmakers is that
