CALLUM KEPT PACE with Kate as she hurried along Downing Street. âAre you sure that was a wise promise to make?â he said.
âDid it seem like we had a choice?â
Kate accelerated to try to kill the conversation, but she fairly quickly discovered the obvious flaw in this tactic: Callumâs legs were so long that he needed only a single stride for two of her own. âWhy are you doing this?â he asked, as they swung on to Whitehall.
Kate waited until theyâd woven through the tourists loitering in the sunshine outside the gate before she answered. âWhy am I doing what?â
âNo one has explained to me why you left SIS, though I guess being lured into Agent Danteâs web had something to do with it. So why are you doing this?â
âDoes it matter?â
âIt would help me to know. It might explain why you just made an undeliverable promise.â
Kate stopped. âCallum, weâre going to get along just fine if you do what I ask without issue or complication and donât ask me questions about my motives.â
âAh, and if I do, what happens? I get promoted?â
As he towered over her, his handsome face creased with the faintest hint of a grin, she was aware for the first time of the true impact of his charisma. Young he might be, but naive he was not. âIf your true motive is revenge for being forced out of SIS, then it would be good to know,â he said. âThatâs all.â
âItâs not.â
âIâd understand if you wanted to bring Ian Granger down,â he went on, âif he was the guy who forced you from the organization youâd devoted your life to.â
âHe wasnât.â
âHas the prime minister promised you something?â
âWhy do you ask that?â
âBecause thatâs normally how he works. He rarely delivers on any commitment, as Iâm sure youâve worked out.â
Of course Kate knew the prime ministerâs word was worth almost nothing â and yet wasnât she, on some level, relying on it? âSo what do you think I should have said back there?â she asked.
âIf youâre asking my honest advice, Iâd have held firm, warning against the leak but saying youâll deliver the verdict of your investigation whenever itâs ready. He might well survive the no-confidence vote anyway â and, if he doesnât, whoever succeeds him is going to want to get to the bottom of this.â
âHow public-spirited of them.â She started walking again. âWhat do you really make of him?â Callum burst out laughing. âWhatâs so funny?â she demanded.
âHeâs a politician! I mean, if you really want to know, weâll be here for hours. Heâs selfish, but capable of altruism and generosity. Heâs egotistical, insecure, but bullish, even brutish â a suit of armour heâs learnt to put on. Heâs emotionally incontinent and utterly unreliable, but needs to be loved in a way that is by turns endearing and pathetic. Heâs smart, cunning and likes to make bold gestures, though heâs also capable of chronic indecision. Heâs funny sometimes, kind at others, but an absolute bastard when his backâs to the wall.
