Chance lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling. Somewhere in the vast hotel he knew Allie was doing the same. Was she regretting the grand gesture at the roulette table? Wishing things had turned out differently? He remembered her touch on his hand, the way she'd brushed his palms gently with her thumbs, and he sighed.

He glanced at the clock, and decided to take a shower before bed. He undressed and stood under the hot water with his head bowed, letting it run over his face, gather at his chin, drop to the tiles in twisting streams. Then, when he was done, he stepped out and dried himself, wrapping himself in a fresh bathrobe.

There was a knock at the door, and Chance froze. He hadn't ordered room service, and it was after eleven pm. Then his face cleared. It was probably a guest getting the room numbers mixed up. He went to explain, but when he opened the door Allie was standing there, twisting her fingers together nervously. She'd let her hair down, had changed into a skirt and blouse, and he could smell her delicate perfume.

As Chance stared at her, stunned, she looked up at him, her eyes amused. "That bet going the wrong way?" she said, in an aggrieved tone. "That would never have happened in a movie."

"It was very dramatic," said Chance.

"Yeah, but it didn't work." Allie stepped closer, slipping her hands behind his neck, and Chance felt a rush of warmth as she pressed herself against him. "But you know what?" she whispered. "Fate can take a hike."
