Chapter 19
Chase
“I forgot to ask what happened with Snake,” Chase said from his perch on the bar stool. Despite his best attempts to stay awake, by the time Ty had gotten home he was passed out. This morning Owen and Colin had come by while they were having breakfast to go over the final plans for the yard, and then the doctor showed up to check on his progress. It was so foreign to have so many people coming and going through their space and Chase knew it was only a matter of time before Ty put a lockdown on the revolving door policy the others had adopted.
Now, as he watched Ty make lunch, he had to force down the idea that he should be doing it. It was only until he recovered and being cautious was the fastest way to get there. The weight of their conversation would stay with him for a long time and if he had to remind himself of that a hundred times a day, he would.
“You mean Eugene,” Ty teased as he stacked cold cuts on a couple of hoagie rolls. “We were right, by the way. Something’s definitely going on with him and the phone sex operator.”
“Tell me you called him that!” Chase would have paid good money to see the look on Snake’s face if Ty did.
“Of course I did. His face turned a real interesting shade of red, kinda like a tomato about to explode.” Ty’s deep laughter filled the kitchen and Chase knew his own smile was huge. This was them, not the stupid misunderstanding earlier, and he loved it. Ty put down the mayo knife, puffed out his chest and imitated Snake’s gruff voice. “That man is a decorated federal agent.”
“Ohhhh, decorated even!” He really couldn’t wait to take a few jabs at the man who taunted him every chance he got. “Do you think Greg calls him Eugene or Snake in bed?”
Ty shivered at the question. “Neither option sounds appealing. Ugh, don’t make me think about Snake naked.”
It wasn’t that Snake was a bad looking man, quite the contrary. He was a ginger bear and, if he had a better attitude, he would be kinda hot in a cuddly sort of way. Maybe the phone sex operator slash decorated federal agent got to see that side of him. “I so can’t wait to take a shot at him.”
“You’ll make him grovel first.” Ty shot him a pointed look before sobering. “For a guy with a lot of apologizing to do, he was still the same bastard we’ve come to know and hate.”
That was very telling. Ty was most abrasive with the people he considered friend and the list was longer than he let himself believe. That abrasiveness was proof that he trusted a person on some level. “Did you expect any less?”
“No,” Ty said thoughtfully as he came around the bar and took the other stool. “None of this is what I was expecting. We gathered so much information on everyone, but I feel like I’m getting blindsided at every turn.
