When Raine woke up, he couldn’t see. Or rather, he didn’t dare open his eyes. His head felt like it was split down the middle, held together by metal hooks. Even the minimal act of moving his eyelids threatened to increase the pain beyond what was already an unbearable level. On top of that, there was a horrific level of brightness burning just past his eyelids. He felt certain he couldn’t bear the pain that would come if any light waves struck his retina. He wasn’t aware of anything beyond the immediacy of the crushing pain in his head. He raised an arm to drape over his eyes and let out a low groan.

“Are you awake?” a woman’s voice asked. “How are you feeling?”

Raine didn’t recognize the voice. It wasn’t Nat. It wasn’t Rebecca. It wasn’t even Selina. He let out a long sigh. He was going to have to open his eyes after all.

When he did, he had no idea where he was. Not specifically, anyway. Generally, he was in an apartment. The windows were covered with disappointingly inadequate shades of gauzy fabric. The walls were covered in a random mosaic of drawings and paintings, none of which he particularly liked, although there were a few with random intersecting geometric lines that seemed to soothe his headache somehow. A tilt of that aching head confirmed he was on a bed, or rather a mattress on the floor. He realized he wasn’t wearing a shirt. He reached under the single sheet draped over his form and was at least able to confirm he was wearing pants.

“Dan?” the voice asked. “Are you okay?”

Raine forced his face toward the voice and squinted through throbbing eyes. “Veronica?”

It was indeed Veronica Kwon. He was in Veronica Kwon’s apartment. He was in Veronica Kwon’s bed. He was half naked. And he had no memory of how he got there or what they did. Did they do something?

“Did we…?” he croaked.

Kwon laughed. “Uh no, Dan. No. Definitely not. You’re not exactly my type. You’re more like my mom’s type.”

That hurt even more than the blinding light slicing in from the windows. Sunlight. Daylight. Day time. Oh crap.

“What time is it?” He tried to sit up. That was a bad idea. He quickly lay down again.

“Uh, eight-fifteen,” Kwon answered. “Well, almost eight-thirty.”

Raine’s heart slowed a bit. He hadn’t missed picking up the boys. Not yet anyway. He wasn’t ready to sit up yet, let alone drive. “What happened? How did I get here?” Then, after a moment, “And where is my shirt?”

“Yeah, so all of those are kind of related,” Kwon answered. She sat down on the bed, sending it reeling in Raine’s estimation. He braced against the motion and waited for the explanation. “So, um, I think one of my friends thought it would be funny to spike your drink. Either that or someone did it when they weren’t looking. But either way, someone put something in your drink while you were in the bathroom. You never leave your drink alone, man.
