CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Brielle

I brushed my teeth then slipped into the shower, needing to get Trey’s scent off me. Too bad I couldn’t erase the feel of his arms around me. The solidity of his erection against my stomach. The safety his presence provided.

I shampooed my hair then rinsed, ready to go to bed to sleep off the night. I turned off the water, twisted out the excess water from my hair, and wrapped a white towel around me. I walked out to the room and grabbed a tank top and shorts. I examined the shorts in my hand, wondering if Trey was lying about them turning him on.

My phone buzzed on the dresser. I grabbed it and checked the screen. My father was calling. He was the last person I needed to hear from, so I sent the call to voicemail. Once the voicemail popped up, it showed four missed voicemails from him. He must’ve discovered I’d terminated my working relationship with Flow. It wasn’t like the firm lost him. Arthur would take good care of him.

A knock on the door had me spinning around.

Oh, God. Please don’t tell me he flew here.

I went to the door, scared by what I might find on the other side. I inched toward the peephole and looked through it. I sucked in a sharp breath.

Trey stood outside my room, his hands in the pockets of his basketball shorts and his eyes cast down.

“What is it, Trey?” I called through the door.

“I need to talk to you.”

“I just got out of the shower. I’m not dressed.”

His eyes flashed up. He stared at the peephole, essentially right at me. “Open the door, Brie.”

“No.”

“Brie. I’m gonna need you to open the door.”

The intensity in his eyes and the butterflies swarming in my belly were too much. I reached for the deadbolt, still not sure if I should let him in. I unlocked it then grasped the door handle. I pulled in a breath then tugged the door open.

Trey stepped forward, forcing me to backpedal into the room. He slammed the door shut with his foot and grasped my cheeks between his hands. My heart slammed against the wall of my chest as I stared up into his eyes.

“I lied,” he said.

“About what?”

“I told you I stayed away from things I could get addicted to.”

I tilted my head, confused.

“But I can’t stay away from you.”

My eyebrows shot up, all coherent thoughts escaping me.

“I know I screw up and give you grief. And I know we can’t seem to get along for more than a few days at a time. But there’s something about you, Brie. Something that challenges me. Something that makes me want to fight with you more than anyone else on this planet. Because when you finally come around and smile at me, like really smile and mean it, I’m a goner.”

I swallowed hard, not knowing what to say. I wanted him there. I wanted him saying more of these things to me. I wanted to keep feeling the way I did in that moment.
