“This is his fucking hat! I’m telling you,” I snarled. My temper was escalating.
Fuck this! I started walking away from them. I was at the brink, and if they weren’t careful, I was going to deck one of them. They were wasting time bitching and moaning because Hades and I drove up here first. They were taking too long! If it was one of their significant others or lovers they’d have done the same damn thing. They needed to stop riding my ass and listen.
Yes, I’d said I’d wait. I said a lot of things today that meant diddly fucking squat with Graham still missing. If they hadn’t taken forever to get here, I wouldn’t have left without them.
Though, it wasn’t fair to blame them for having to travel to get here. I’d been here all fucking day and couldn’t stop his abduction.
I’d failed him.
I sighed and walked back to my team. They were still where I’d left them, scowling. They’d get over it. Hades and I were already headed up this hill when they busted through the foliage. I’d almost taken them down out of instinct. Obviously, my nerves were a little more than frayed, and their questions were the straw that broke the camel’s back.
I glared them all down.
No one moved, all eyes on me for a long minute. Raff spoke.
“Alright, man, alright. We got it but, like Moose said, that trail is fucking dangerous. Do you think that’s the way they went? You know this area, you know Graham.”
I gave Raff a hard look. He was playing peacekeeper. I nodded, then scanned the area again. We’d been out here for about- well- fuck if I know. Had to be a few hours now. The rain was slowing us down, but just barely. The night vision goggles kept us on our feet, but the slippery trail was worse than we expected.
We were being pelted with bone chilling rain, the wind was horrid and there was fucking ice in this shit. Thankfully, Moose and the guys had brought their gear, so we were all waterproofed, other than our faces. And Hades. He wore his vest and a makeshift rain tarp, but he didn’t seem to give a shit either way. He was loving this.
His nose had picked up on a scent and I didn’t care what my team said, we were going up that trail. Something was familiar…it took me scanning the area again and letting the memories of our childhood back in before I got it. I knew why this place was so familiar.
“Holy shit! I know where he’s taking them, and it’s not the place on the map. The crazy motherfucker. We have to get to the other side of this ridge.” I point northeast of our current position. “He’s taking them to our old campsites.” I stopped to remember. God, I hadn’t up here since I was a teenager. “Alright, campsites at one o’clock, three o’clock and five o’clock. I don’t know the terrain anymore, it’s been years, but this trail leads up and then over.
