Fourteen

Wednesday, 1 February

Valerie scanned the front of her building, checking for any sign of Max lurking in the shadows.

Nothing.

She checked her phone.

Six thirty-five. He should be there by now.

But then again, if he was listening in then he’d know she wasn’t home yet.

Good. That would give her time to set up.

She swung her backpack around in front of her, feeling empowered by its contents. The cameras were bloody expensive, but it would be worth every cent if she could catch out Max.

She unlocked the building door then climbed the stairs to the second-floor landing. A door slammed, and she jumped. Get a grip. It’s nothing.

She rushed to her apartment and unlocked the door.

‘You’re late.’

She spun around, her heart belting in her chest.

Max sat sprawled in the stairwell behind her; gun in hand with a smug grin on his face.

She froze, fixated on the gun, then shoved the door open and ducked inside. A loud thud sounded on the landing and Max caught the door, pushing it open.

Valerie ran behind the dining table and opened her backpack, making certain not to expose the new set of cameras buried in the bottom of her bag. She couldn’t let him find them. That would ruin her plan.

Just give him the patient files and hope he leaves. Shit. That was wishful thinking. He wasn’t there just for the files. She pulled out the envelope and tossed it across the table, then zipped up her bag and tucked it under a chair.

Max kicked the door shut and strode to the table, scooping up the envelope as he continued towards her. He pulled out a chair and aimed the gun at her. ‘Sit down.’

She sat in the chair and stared at him, trembling.

He placed the gun on the table and pulled out the bundle of patient files, flicking through them. ‘Good.’ A smile crossed his face and he dropped something in her lap. ‘Congratulations. You’re officially profiting from crime.’

She stared down at a bundle of one-hundred-dollar bills. ‘No!’ She jumped up and threw the money at him. ‘I don’t want it. I’m not like—’

A hand caught her wrist, pulling her into his arms. ‘And there she is.’ He let out a mock laugh. ‘I was wondering when you’d fight back. And what were you saying? You’re not like what, Valerie? Huh? Like me? A criminal?’

‘No.’ She writhed in his grasp, not wanting to acknowledge the truth — that she had chosen to do this. She chose to steal the patient files. But hell, she wasn’t doing it for money. ‘No.’ She glared at him. ‘I’m not like you. Let go.’

He spun her around, pinning her against the table. His lips smothered her mouth and his hands groped her breasts. Hot breath flooded her neck. ‘Now I don’t mind you being feisty, as long you know your place. I’m sure we can make this arrangement work.’

No. This wasn’t happening. She shoved him in the chest.

He didn’t budge.

A hand ran down her abdomen and tugged at the buttons on her pants.
