Meadow Lane, Walthamstow

Even on a quiet weekday, the ten-mile drive from Ghost Division to Walthamstow would have taken nearly forty minutes in London traffic. With Officer Braithwaite at the wheel of an Audi S8 with its lights and siren on, though, Rebecca managed to get there in twenty.

Forensics were already on the scene, erecting tall white panels around either end of the street to seal it off. Even residents weren’t allowed to access their homes until a thorough sweep by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) had been done.

Unit One’s point man, Harper, took Rebecca to the garage. She put on a pair of Tactical black nitrile examination gloves, CTSFO’s official issue for crime scenes thanks to the synthetic rubber, which offered better puncture and abrasion resistance.

In the dim light of the garage, Harper asked her, ‘Who did you say you were with?’

Rebecca crouched down to inspect the wire attached to the rear garage door. ‘Stanley House,’ she replied, absently.

‘My boss says you’re some kind of communications expert.’

Rebecca followed the wire along the ground to the wall plug. ‘Something like that.’

‘We haven’t touched a thing,’ Harper said.

A quick inspection told Rebecca the wire on the back door had been rigged to the power supply for the TV, while the laptop video had been running on a loop – set to start over when the TV was recognised.

‘Very clever,’ she said to herself, reluctant to touch anything unless absolutely necessary. Examining the laptop, Rebecca found the video application.

Hearing the distorted voice again set Harper’s teeth on edge. Like having a nightmare replayed.

Rebecca took out her mobile and called Curtis, who was still at her video link in Chequers.

‘Rebecca,’ Curtis answered. She could hear the attacker’s video in the background. ‘Where are you?’

Rebecca replied, ‘I’m in the Walthamstow house, Prime Minister.’

Harper’s eyes widened, wondering how on earth Rebecca was able to get the Prime Minister on the phone at a moment’s notice.

She said to Curtis, ‘I’m going to show you a video. Can you tell me if you recognise the image and audio style?’

Rebecca selected the video camera on her phone to show Curtis a clip.

Curtis quickly affirmed, ‘That’s the same as the one Colfield showed me. The voice, the look.’

Rebecca returned to the voice call. ‘I thought so,’ she replied.

‘What are you thinking?’

‘I’m thinking it’s good news. This time we have a full video to analyse. That means rhetoric, word choice, tone...we have a decent chunk to go on. Not to mention an analysis of how and when and where the video was created.’

‘How long will that take?’ asked Curtis.

Rebecca wanted to reply, “as long as it takes.” Instead, she said, ‘Hopefully not long, Prime Minister.’

‘As quick as you can,’ she said, ‘and Rebecca...’ Curtis paused, then her voice turned hushed, as if she didn’t want other people in the room to hear. ‘I can’t talk about it now, but there’s been some progress with our Downing Street mole.’

Rebecca quickly moved to the front of the garage. ‘What kind of progress?’ she asked quietly.
