Benkerk was waiting for her in the stair hall. “Are you okay now?” he asked.

“No. But I’m better, thank you.”

“What’s next?”

“I’m going to have a powwow with Toni and my old crew, see what we can come up with.”

“Do you want to share your approach?”

“I want to run comparisons of the reports from our NOCs in Russia, Pakistan, and North Korea from one year ago to the present as of thirty days ago.”

“To see if their signatures have changed?” Benkerk asked.

Signatures were pro-words built into messages sent home that would appear to be nothing more than quirks in language. One agent might occasionally start his coded sentences—especially important ones—with the word “So.” Another might use the phrase “waiting on” something, rather than “waiting for.”

“That and the quality of their reports, among other indicators.”

“Will you share product?”

“Of course,” Mary promised.
