Something was bugging him, though. The new system would work beautifully, he could feel its sure vibes even now. But Sarah wouldn’t know about it. He often thought about her, sitting with him in the pub drinking her ridiculous cocktail, when she’d poked fun at his remark – his true statement – that computers could achieve anything. By the end of their talk he’d really wanted to get together with her. She was intelligent and attractive - and she’d as good as told him he was incompetent. A comedian. The insult had grown in his mind. He seethed when he thought about it.

To cap it all, she’d vanished, leaving him no chance to prove her wrong. He’d asked Simeon, Freddy, and Taylor’s secretary where she could be contacted, but they had only her previous phone number and address. She’d set up a PO box number for her correspondence, and her email had been discontinued Twice he went to the flat where she’d been living and rang the bell, but no-one answered.

Apart from Taylor, Cooke and Lamarr, with whom he had technical discussions, there was no-one around that he wanted to spend time with. A few of the female nurses had tried to start conversations at mealtimes in the canteen. There had been one close call, but he didn’t want to get into that again. What did they want, anyway? To prove they could win over someone who could find little to say to them? It would turn out the same old way, and the emotional repercussions would reverberate in the workplace, and disrupt his work.

And besides . . . Sarah might come back.

With Tracks almost ready to replace Semper he had the means to protect her. He wanted to tell her that. Then she would know he was for real.
