Cleve had always been a master of multi-tasking, but that attribute was slowly falling by the wayside as his disturbing health problems quickly took their toll. In fact, one early afternoon, just after Cleve and John had completed a business luncheon in the conference room opposite Cleveâs office, he found himself rushing to the rest room with a touch of diarrhea. Later that day, Cleve complained to Debra about a severe headache accompanied by a touch of nausea he couldnât seem to shake.
Cleve stayed on working until late afternoon when Debra heard a frightful thud punctuated by silence. She rushed from her desk at the far end of the executive corridor to find her boss had collapsed and had apparently hit his head on the tile floor with such force that there was blood splatter on the wall. Debra screamed for help, her voice slicing through the air like a fire alarm bell. Andrea, who was in the secretarial pool at the time, hurried to Cleveâs side, a rueful frown coated her face. The sight of him crumpled on the floor holding his stomach as if in severe pain, chilled every bone in her body.
When the medics arrived, Cleve was, indeed, complaining of intense stomach distress and fatigue. Andrea followed the ambulance as he was immediately whisked away to the hospital. There, the emergency staff recorded that he presented with esophageal pain associated with gastric distress and a throbbing headache which was of concern, considering the fact that he might be suffering from a head injury. Though his blood pressure was elevated for a short period of time, it finally settled down to a reasonable reading, but with a history of arrhythmia, the doctor wanted to be sure Cleveâs medication hadnât caused a ventricular tachycardia or a ventricular fibrillation. Fortunately, in the process of assessment, Cleve underwent an MRI that proved negative for a concussion. Tests also proved his sinus rhythm was normal. However, it was determined that the patient definitely needed special care, and the nurses and the doctor on call that day were extremely cautious. Nevertheless, Cleve continued to endure an upset stomach and a deep sense of depression that left him feeling as if he were totally isolated. After being treated for what appeared to be flu-like symptoms, the doctor suggested that he be admitted for a two-day stay to be sure that all signs of distress were under control, meaning that the arrhythmia was properly regulated and that his heartâs sinus rhythm hadnât been affected in any manner. Knowing he was in no condition to object, Cleve grudgingly agreed to stay. Hence, he was admitted at 6:50 that afternoon.
Andrea called her daughters and explained the situation, telling them that she was going to spend the night with their father and that the two should go on to school the next day.
âDonât worry, Mom,â Olivia said. âWeâll take care of everything.â
Megan abruptly grabbed the phone and reassured her mother that they could handle it.
âI know you can do this,â Andrea told them.
