“Yeah, that’s not happening. No way.”

“Excuse me?” Billie’s face tensed and I could see her need to fight me rise to the surface. She had already made her mind up, but that didn’t mean I had to agree with it. Returning to the cavern was a dumb idea, and I was going to make sure she knew that.

My fingers curled tighter around hers, and I had to bite my tongue to keep from squeezing. “Why would you even want to go back there?” I asked. “That place put you through Hell, and now, what? You want to ask for more?”

Billie pulled away from me and I instantly missed her touch.

“I need my magic,” she announced, leaving me no room to argue. “This isn’t up for debate. I’m going, and I’m going alone.”

“That’s a hard no.”

“Wasn’t asking for permission here,” she snapped.

Clenching my jaw, I dared to meet her eyes. “Babe, if you think I’m letting you go back to that damn place on your own, you’re crazy.”

The look on her face told me my choice of words was far from great. I probably should have reconsidered using that term around her. Seeing that Billie had spent the last while trying to convince all of us she wasn’t insane, my outburst was a trigger if I’ve ever heard one. I immediately regretted saying it.

And the prick of the year award goes to… “You know what I mean,” I said, hoping it would lighten the mood. It did not. “Let me come with you, in case something happens.”

Billie looked as though she was thinking it over, and a glimpse of hope fluttered its wings in my chest. I should have known better by now, she wasn’t debating letting me tag along, she was only looking for the words to let me down easy. Leave it to Billie to worry about my feelings when she was about to throw herself into danger. Stubborn, impossible woman!

“Look,” she finally uttered, “it’s not that I don’t want you there. I really do. But if you come with me, all I’ll be thinking about is your safety, and that will just get in the way. I need to do this alone so I can concentrate on my magic and not be distracted. Besides, we need you here to stay close to Savannah. The coven wanted her for some reason, and I know Sebyl. Once she has her sights on something, she’s not letting go. A dog with a bone, that one.”

I could not begin to describe how much I despised the logic in her thinking.

“And you said you’ll talk to Logan, remember? See why he’s been hiding remembering Morgan and Lorelei.”

Fucking Logan. The last thing I wanted was to talk to that pretentious tool, but Billie was right. If he truly did remember these people, we needed to know how and why. My mind raced and my legs tensed when I pictured the upcoming conversation. A part of me wanted him to be lying, to come out and say the whole thing was a cry for attention or something else equally stupid.
