THIRTY-SEVEN

Kamal suggested that they have dinner in the hotel’s La Vistamar on the terrace overlooking the harbor. It had one Michelin star, and Susan accepted immediately.

She phoned the yacht and had some fresh clothes, including a cocktail dress and decent shoes, sent over to the hotel.

“I’ll just jump in the shower, if you’ll be a dear and make reservations,” she said. “If they give you any trouble use my name.”

When she was in the bedroom suite Kamal called the restaurant on the house phone and booked them a table for two. Even using Susan’s name, nothing was open until nine, two hours from now.

Out on the balcony he phoned Sa’ad, who seemed impatient, almost angry at being disturbed again.

“I’m late,” he said. “Be quick.”

“Joe Canton, the American who’s brought the bitcoin scheme to Hammond, could be a cop looking for me.”

“Yes, I know. But if you can’t complete this operation cleanly then I want you to back away. In any event, half of the objective has been accomplished with the desired effect. There’s even talk in Congress about joining with Russian forces in Syria. Our problem could be solved that easily.”

“I want to walk away intact.”

“Walk away if that’s what you want. But the other half of your fee will be forfeited.”

“Intact,” Kamal said. “I’m not going to spend the rest of my life in prison somewhere. Or watching over my shoulder for someone coming up behind me.”

Sa’ad did not reply for a longish moment. “What are you saying?”

“I want to finish, but I need some information.”

Again Sa’ad held his silence for a beat. When he came back he was cautious. “Nothing will be traced back to us,” he said. “You know this. If you fail we will wash our hands of you.”

“Behind sovereign immunity?”

“If it comes to that. But you’re not stopping?”

“No,” Kamal said. Strictly speaking he didn’t need the money, though it was going to be very expensive to go deep. But in point of fact if a dozen buildings with people in them needed to come down he would be happy to take on the satisfying work.

“As you wish. What help do you need?”

“I have two photographs of the American. I want to know who he is.”

“Was he aware that you had taken them?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes,” Kamal said.

“I won’t be able to look at them until later tonight or sometime tomorrow. But if I come up with something, I’ll call you.”

“Thank you.”

“In the meantime, don’t do anything stupid.”

Kamal’s grip on the phone tightened. Killing the Saudi intelligence officer would be a thing of joy—foolish, but satisfying. “I’ll wait for your call.”

“Will you be aboard Hammond’s yacht for the race?”

“Yes.”

“Will your American and his woman be there as well?”

“Almost certainly.”

“Send the photographs.”

Kamal sent them.

“I’ll try to get back to you before then,” Sa’ad said, and he hung up.

“You’re a man of many mysteries,” Susan said from the doorway. She was drying her hair with a towel, but she was naked, her body still glistening.

Kamal turned around.”Do you find that appealing?”

“I find money appealing.
