CHAPTER 11

ZARA

“How’s everything at home?” My dad’s voice carries to me from the speaker as I lie in bed. Thankfully, the week went by quickly, and Saturday has now arrived. I was planning on sleeping in for once, but my dad decided to call at nine, and I didn’t have the heart to ignore him.

“It’s good. Pretty quiet. I was at the cafe last night until almost midnight; they had to kick me out.” I laugh and hear him stifle a laugh on his end.

“Sounds like you. How did the party go last week?” Oh my God, that was only a week ago?

“It was good, surprisingly. Nothing was broken or stolen, and cops weren’t called. I’d say that’s a good high school party in my book.” I shuffle my body upwards to lean on my bed frame.

“Oh, sweetie, you’d never have to worry about that. You know the cops will never come to the house, especially for a house party.” I get the underlying message here. Nobody would ever come because Claire owns this town.

“Yeah… well, I’m going to go get ready for my day. I’ve got some assignments to work on that I want to finish today to have the day off tomorrow.” I throw the covers off and slide my feet into my fluffy slippers, walking into the bathroom with my phone in hand.

“Sounds good, sweetie. Are you all ready for the fair in a few weeks?” I groan, and he laughs. Usually, I’m more excited about the fair, but this year something feels different. Maybe I’m just getting older, and the thought of going to a fair where everyone knows you or being surrounded by kids doesn’t sound as appealing as it used to.

“Apparently, the Westminster family has donated a few rides, so yeah… it’s all peachy.” I can’t help but keep the bitterness out of my voice. My dad is about to reply, when the door to my left opens, and a shirtless Nico saunters in.

“Good morning, Princess.” Nico smirks as he scratches his pectorals.

“Zara, who’s that?” My dad’s voice comes out serious, and I can’t help the snort that leaves my nose.

“You’re joking, right, Dad?” I swipe some toothpaste onto my toothbrush and run the tip under the water.

“Zara VanWinkle, you know what I’ve said about boys.” I laugh at that because Dad has never once said anything about boys. He’s only saying that because he thinks he heard someone that isn’t his stepson.

“Good morning, Grant.” Nico snickers, and I roll my eyes. He sat quietly because he thought this was funny.

“Oh, Nico, it’s you.” He sounds relieved. “Remember what I told you, son.” My head turns to Nico, and I give him a look that would kill if I had that power. I know that my dad and Nico had talked, but I didn’t think it had anything to do with me. Why would my dad say something as vague as that while I’m standing right here—especially when it clearly relates to me.

“Oh, don’t worry, Grant.
