There are crowds of people lining the streets as fire trucks and floats drive by. Everyone cheering and clapping as they pass, infectious smiles bouncing between the streets. And here I stand with a bottle of wine cooler pressed to my lips while Lincoln’s hand rests comfortably between my legs gripping my thigh. He drinks from his own amber bottle while chatting with James, sitting in a folding chair next to Lincoln. Emma stands next to me laughing and cheering as the floats pass by.

I don’t think James and Emma are that great of friends with Lincoln, but I think he recognized how comfortable I felt with Emma at the beach bonfire a month ago. Most of the group outings we attend are either with them, or because of them.

“Isn’t that Mr. Hall?” Emma shouts over the crowds pointing across the street with her hand that holds her drink.

My eyes follow her direction scanning the crowd for Lincoln’s dad, that’s when I see him leaving an office. The large sign on top reading Hall and Burkley Law Services. He locks the door, a gym bag slung over his shoulder. A woman, short blonde and dressed in medical scrubs, follows behind him with a bright smile. They come to the cross walk and she takes the gym bag he was holding and walks the opposite direction.

Lincoln must have heard Emma because I have to step back, his grip on my leg tightening. I look down at him at the same time he looks up at me apologetically, dropping his beer into the cup holder on the arm of his folding chair.

He stands up, a firm hand clasped around the back of my neck. “I’m sorry,” he mumbles against my lips, kissing me lightly.

I know he didn’t mean to grip me that way. “It’s fine.”

He pulls away the look on his face troubled, warring with different emotions. It kills a small part of me to see him hurt and confused but another part grows knowing he feels okay sharing those feelings with me.

“Should we follow him?”

And that’s exactly what we did. We grabbed our shit as fast as we could and followed Mr. Hall down the street to a parking lot where he got in his car and drove off. The parade streets were too crowded, there was no way we wouldn’t lose him in all the traffic and people.

When Lincoln and I finally made it back to his parents’ house everyone was already in the backyard. Laughter and music surrounded us as we walked out onto his back porch hand in hand.

“I’m gonna say something.” Lincoln says his eyes glued to his father manning the grill.

“Not now, Linc.” But he doesn’t look at me, he just keeps staring at his dad across the deck. “Lincoln,” I urge pulling his cheeks so he will look at me, “not today.” But I can feel the heat under his skin.

“I can’t,” he pulls in a deep breath trying to find the words. “I’m going to,” he pauses again, his fists clenching and unclenching.
