An uneasy silence was broken a few minutes later by the letterbox rattling. David walked into the hall and returned with three late Christmas cards. He handed Beth one which was addressed solely to her, and then opened the other two. One was from his Aunt Ginny, the other from a couple he and Beth met on holiday in France.
Beth stared at the plain white envelope. The printed name and address. Bethany Cruikshank. Riverside, Feelham. It was postmarked Oxford.
âWhat is it?â David asked, from somewhere far away.
âItâsâ¦â
âBeth?â
She dropped the envelope and sat on the edge of the sofa, fingers plucking at the neck of her sweatshirt.
David picked up the envelope and opened it. He pulled out a photo and shook his head.
âWhat is it?â
âItâs a picture of a crib.â
âWhat crib?â
âThe one I dismantled and put in the garage after you lost the baby.â David went to the drinks cabinet and poured himself a Scotch. âItâs got the word âKarmaâ stuck on it with letters cut out from a magazine.â
Beth didnât need a detective to offer an interpretation of the message.
Kim walked into the lounge. âIs everything all right?â
âNo,â David replied. âItâs not.â
Kim sat next to Beth. Wrapped an arm around her shoulder. âWhatâs happened now?â
âWeâve received more post,â David said. âA photo of an empty crib. Iâm going to take it to the police station and hand it in. I canât see any point in them coming out to the house. Iâve had enough unwanted intrusions to last me a lifetime.â
Beth thought the last remark was a thinly veiled snipe at Kim. Good. Let him. It made no difference to the way Beth felt. He was the one in the wrong here, not her. She wouldnât have been at all surprised to learn that David had known the contents of the envelope long before heâd opened it.
