CHAPTER 4

POLE POSITION

Sam rooted around in his small rucksack and pulled out a pair of black and silver glitter leg warmers, black Lycra shorts, and a gray skinny-fit tee with the words “Hug Dealer” on the front. He stripped and changed into his workout gear, tied his fair hair into a top knot and then gathered his belongings and exited the male bathroom above the Rose and Crown Pub.

The landlord of the pub rented out the function room to all kinds of community groups, from the Pensioners Tea Dance Club to the Aerial Dance Society. The function room had a large dance floor, and brackets for four poles had been installed in the floor and ceiling so that chrome dance poles could be easily fitted when needed, and removed when not in use. There was built-in banquette seating around the perimeter of the room, and it was laid out with the usual array of round dark timber tables, stools, and chairs that could be seen in any English pub.

“Denise, did Johnny put the heating on? It’s bloomin’ freezing in here today.” Sam called as he sashayed across the dance floor, his feet bare and legwarmers hugging his calves. Sam’s shorts were skin tight, and his ass looked squeezable pert.

“Ooh, I know. I’ve got nipples like bullets.” Denise exclaimed camply; her leotard displayed that this was, in fact, the truth. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the radiators were off. Johnny’s such a tight bastard. I’ll go check the thermostat”, the pole fitness instructor called as she headed for the ‘staff only’ door.

Sam placed his belongings on the banquette seat at the far end of the room and then adjusted the lighting to send spotlights to the dance floor. None of the other pole fitness students had arrived yet, but Sam always liked to get to class early, warm up, and have some private time on the pole. And today, he needed an extra workout.

It had been seven days since Sam had eaten pizza with the devastatingly gorgeous Alex Deveraux. They usually bumped into one another around the halls of the university or in the refectory and exchanged a darting, heated look, a nod of recognition, or even a few conversational words. But frustratingly, Sam hadn’t laid eyes on him at all for the past week. Was Alexander avoiding him? Granted, Sam had made a pass at his tutor, and yes, he knew the next time they had tutorial it would be… awkward. But Sam was on the cusp of a sexual awakening and surprising even himself; he didn’t regret his bold behavior. In hindsight, he got quite a kick out of being forward.

For the whole week, Sam couldn’t stop thinking about Alexander—the image of his blue eyes, his dazzling smile and pert backside were now burned into Sam’s memory. He’d spent far too much time over-analyzing every single encounter he’d had with Alex since they’d first met three months prior, and now, as soon as Sam closed his eyes to sleep,
