Carver
Elliot
Carver popped six hundred milligrams of ibuprofen into his mouth and swallowed the tablets with a swig of gin. The problem with air travel was that he liked to yawn and chew gum to combat ear pressure - but those very acts aggravated his TMJ. He closed his eyes and rubbed his cheeks with both hands. The jaw muscles were tense and hard as nails.
Carver and his immediate entourage were flying in a private British Aerospace 125 Corporate 800B jet that he used for travel between Germany and Saigon. It was an horrendous trip, but he had done it many times. He usually had the pilot stop in Bombay for a breather.
The plane was just entering India’s air space.
As he looked out of the window at the clouds floating against the bright blue sky, Carver attempted to summon up some feelings of melancholy. She was gone … his wife was gone. It was curious that he didn’t feel more grief, no matter how hard he tried. Perhaps he had really grown tired of her after all. It hadn’t been the difficult decision he had thought it would be to have stamper do away with her.
Besides, she was a lying, betraying bitch who slept with the enemy.
Carver coldly dismissed Paris from his mind and heart. She had been wonderful when it was good, but it hadn’t been good for a long time. He had married her for her looks and sexual compatibility. He would find other women to replace her. Elliot Carver could have his pick. After all, he was on his way to becoming the most powerful man in the world.
If only his father could see him now, he thought. Lord Roverman, the supreme bastard… May he rot in hell…
Many years ago, Carver had been told by a paediatric psychiatrist that he had a ‘complex’ about his father. It was why he misbehaved in school and bullied younger children. He had been starved for attention. At the time, he couldn’t understand what that had to do with his father. He never saw his father. His father pretended that his son didn’t exist. Carver had to force the old man to pay attention to him, and} that was much later.
Carver understood the analysis now. He could intellectu-alise it, now that he was an adult and had experience behind him. He could see why never knowing one’s true mother, because she had died giving birth, might have an impact on his emotional development. He completely comprehended the notion that his lust for power, fame, and money was in actuality his way of getting back at the father who sired him and then abandoned him.
For God’s sake, Carver thought, the man gave little Elliot away to a poor Chinese family. He actually paid them fifty pounds to take the useless, unwanted child. And his wife - his late wife - often wondered why he was always so ‘bitter’.
“Why are you always such a grouch?” she would ask in that New England accent of hers.
