He still had to sleep in the living room with Rommel because he drank a few beers, but he got a casual kiss goodnight from Carla and friendliness from Malik and that’s improvement with both of them. Plus Rommel may have saved his life today, so it’s okay to sleep on the floor below him. Under a blanket, not feeling like anyone hates him. And tomorrow the whole crew gets together for the first time.

Which is today, he realizes, as Carla rousts him at way too close to dawn. But he does what he should, what any man would: crawls into the bed that still smells of her and sleeps as much as he can.

When there’s no sleep left, he gets up slow. He lumbers to the bathroom first, and when a night’s beer piss is done he walks into the kitchen to make coffee. Better if he had a coffee whore. She wouldn’t need to fuck or blow him so long as Carla did that, just have his coffee hot and poured by the time he got to the kitchen. That’s all the riches he wants, a woman who loves him and someone who serves him coffee the moment he wakes. Don’t need to be the same person.

They used to have a coffee maker he could program but the goddamn thing never got the coffee hot enough. He threw that thing in the street the second day they had it and if someone blew out a tire, that was on the coffee maker company. Tommy and Carla went back to making single cups.

He opens the fridge and pulls out an unopened package of bacon. Turns on the oven, gets his coffee ready and takes a gulp, pulls two flat pans from the drawer under the oven and fills them both with bacon. He’ll be on another coffee by the time the bacon’s ready. Then eat and take a shower and head down to Eddie’s.
