The reporters were waiting in full force. Sergeant Chang caught a glimpse of Sŏ among them. Short of stature, she would have been difficult to pick out from among the tangle of craned necks, but somehow Chang recognized her right off. The next moment he was recalling what he had learned from a detailed background check.

Her former husband was a politician who served a powerful man who, though not a national assemblyman, was a household name. Which was all the more surprising when you considered her pathetic plight at present. Her younger child had heart problems, for which the ex-husband didn’t seem to have contributed much support. Well, she must have had a fling, Chang had thought initially, but he’d found no proof of this. And in her defense, there were quite a few of these deadbeat dads, Chang’s own father among them. She wasn’t all that bad looking, and she had a degree from a university in Seoul, so why was she living a life that appeared so wretched?

Chang let the brothers out of the patrol car and for appearance’ sake—Sergeant Chang, at your service—he whispered a few words of caution. There was an arrogance to his manner that would have been unthinkable a few days earlier.

“No hangdog expressions, no pulling your jacket over your head—none of that stuff. Hold your head up, walk tall, throw a quick smile, and repeat to yourself, ‘This is an outrage, a conspiracy, we’re being sacrificed, but the police and the prosecutor are men of justice, they’ll bring everything to light.’ It won’t be easy, but you’ve got to make an effort. Understood?”

The brothers nodded, their faces fearful. But Chang was already calculating: Before long the tables would turn. In the real world things weren’t as simple as they were in fairy tales. The brothers were holding onto his pant legs like little kids now, but once this interval was over, life would return to normal, and once again they’d be flashing their money in his face like the pompous asses they were. Which made it even more critical for Chang to implant in their brains that he was their savior. The chances of getting a leg up on people who had so much were few and far between—closer to nonexistent, actually, since there were no opportunities to climb to their level. This was the reality.
