“Sorry to make you worry about me.” Jake entered the kitchen with a sheepish grin. He went over to plug his phone into the closest outlet. “My fault for letting my phone go dead.”

“Guess the boat project is going well so far.” Jemma’s smile seemed a bit strained, and he felt bad all over again.

“It’s a project for sure. I’m going to need help from Bree to get her in shape.”

Bree barely glanced at him. “Sure. Happy to help.”

The lack of enthusiasm in her voice was telling. He’d hoped that her kissing him was a sign that they were okay, but apparently not. Smelling the cheese and oregano from the pizza in the center of the picnic table made his mouth water and his stomach growl. “I’m starved, thanks for dinner. Tomorrow night is on me. Anything you’re interested in eating, I’ll pick up for all of us.”

“You may regret that offer,” Jazz teased. “Dig in. We saved a pizza for you and Bree to share.”

He glanced at Bree. “You haven’t eaten yet?”

She shook her head. “I waited for you.”

He sat down on the bench seat across from her, dishing out two slices on her plate, before filling his own. He took a bite. The pizza had grown a bit cold, but he didn’t mind.

“Garth, would you mind giving Trey his bath?” Jemma held her injured wrist against her torso.

“Sure thing. Let’s go, champ.”

“Okay.” Trey didn’t protest, apparently fond of playing in the tub.

“Garth?” His brother-in-law turned to look at him. Jake tried to keep his tone casual. “When you’re finished with Trey’s bath, I’d like to talk to you. If you don’t mind.”

Garth’s brows levered upward. “Sounds serious.”

“It is.”

Jazz and Jemma exchanged looks of concern. Garth simply nodded. “Not a problem.”

“I can give Trey his bath,” Jazz offered.

“I need to eat first, anyway.” Jake took another bite of his pizza, savoring the tangy sauce.

“I’ll be back soon.” Garth lifted the little boy into his arms and carried him through the house, heading to their garage apartment.

For the first time in what seemed like eons, Bree’s eyes reflected her approval. “Glad you’re telling him.”

“You know about this, too?” Jazz let out a harrumph. “I think we need a family meeting. Jeremy is in Lansing, but I can try to find Jesse.”

“No! Don’t bother Jesse, the six of us are more than enough.” Sheesh. He hadn’t anticipated that everyone would be involved, but he realized there was no way to keep this from his sisters. And Bree didn’t know all the details either.

No one did. For twelve years he’d kept his secret. Remembering the way Abe Crowley had locked gazes with him gave him the jolt he’d needed to come clean.

He ate three slices of pizza, holding back until he was convinced Bree was finished. He helped himself to more, realizing it had been a long time since he’d been so hungry.

Performing manual labor had sure worked up an appetite.

By the time Garth returned to the kitchen with Trey, he had finished his meal and had cleaned up the kitchen.
