After having to deal with Lizzie’s less-than-impressed attitude and her insistence that I borrow her car as she didn’t want to see Faye on my motorcycle in her frail state, I finally had Faye in the car, and I’d decided to take her to a Starbucks in town. The car journey there was incredibly awkward. I kept trying to talk to her, and all I seemed to receive were one-word answers. I knew she must be upset that I’d been absent the majority of the weekend, but I planned on making it up to her. After a slightly awkward silence, Faye decided to speak again as we continued our drive.

“I bet you were pissed off with that Devlin guy at the conference?”

“Aye, I wasn’t best impressed.”

“If I were you, I’d have punched him one.”

“I work for the police, and he is my superior, Faye. I can’t exactly go around hitting the man,” I said with a chuckle.

She was quiet again for a moment. “I thought you usually addressed the press, anyway? Why didn’t you this time?”

I sighed. “It’s complicated.”

“Right,” she said dismissively.

I then remembered my promise to myself to be more open with Faye. I was about to ask her to open up to me, but how could I if I didn’t offer her the same respect?

“I thought I was going to address the press, but shortly before it began, I went to see Devlin in his office, and he made me aware that he would be doing it.”

“Why did he want to do it?” Faye asked.

“I dunno, really. I think it was to show me that he is higher up than me and can do what he wants.”

“He sounds a bit of a twat.”

“Language, Faye!” I said sternly. I stopped at a traffic light and looked at her. “Though you’re right and he is one, yeah,” I said with a smirk.

Faye laughed, and the sound was like music to my ears. “So, what did you say to him after the conference?”

“You can’t tell your mother any of this, okay?” She agreed, so I continued. “As soon as we got back, I kicked off at him for not having my back, and he wasn’t best pleased.”

Faye looked at me in awe. “That’s so cool, Dad! Good on you for standing up to him.”

As I parked the car, I smiled at how well things were going between us. We walked into Starbucks, and I asked Faye to choose a table while I got our drinks and food. I noticed they had some millionaire shortbread—Faye’s favorite—so I got her a slice. I caught her disgruntled expression when I joined her at the table with the food and her hot chocolate.

“I only got you a small slice. Your mother has already told me you didn’t eat much for lunch, so you need to at least eat some of it for me, okay?” I asked kindly.

Faye nodded, but she barely looked at the food. She slowly sipped at her hot chocolate and looked around awkwardly.
