Chapter Twelve

Elena wanted to take Sadie to see her dad.

Elena remembered the tensions between her own family and the regret that she still felt today for not being there for them when it all happened. She didn't want Sadie to live with that regret.

When they got there, they went to the visitor’s parking. Sadie turned to her, looking at her in the eyes.

"Why are you helping me Elena? It can’t be because you’re worried about me. There's something more there,” Sadie said.

"If I tell you, will you promise to keep it a secret,” Elena said, looking into Sadie’s eyes.

"Of course. Please tell me. I want to get to know you better," Elena said.

"My mom and I fought, and I didn't see her in the hospital. She is always mad that I didn't follow through with her dreams, even though I'm happier here. I decided not to see her out of anger for the situation, and I honestly regret every moment of it," she said.

"I'm sorry," Elena said.

"It's okay. I keep it to myself for that reason. But I want you to see your father. I know your mom is far from nice about everything, but I do think you should at least see your dad. He cares about you. He’s probably more supportive than she is," Elena said.

"He is. Mom was just mad that I didn't end up following her dreams, so she's upset about that. But I feel better knowing that I'll see him," Sadie said.

"I know. And if your dad does pass, you know I'm here," Elena said.

Sadie smiled, and Elena felt happiness in her heart. They rushed upstairs. When they got to the reception counter, the attendant looked at Sadie with surprise.

"You’re here! Your mom told me that you were busy and wouldn't be coming anytime soon. Your father was quite upset about that,” the receptionist said.

"Well, tell my dad that I'm here. I want to see him,” Sadie said.

Elena was proud of the determination in Sadie's eyes. The way that Sadie looked at the receptionist with that look of real need, and the receptionist understanding.

"Fair enough. It's room 104. Your father was moved to ICU due to breathing issues," the receptionist said.

"Yeah, I had a feeling,” Sadie said.

However, Elena could tell that Sadie didn’t know. It was a lie. They rushed over ICU. When they got there, Sadie’s eyes widened as she saw her father there, unconscious.

"Hey, Dad," she said.

She walked over, touching his hands. He then started to flutter his eyes, looking at them. His eyes widened, and he took a deep breath, shock obvious on his face.

"It's okay, Dad. It's me. I came to see you," she said to her father.

He turned to her, grasping her hand and touching it.

"I thought you didn’t want to see me,” he said.

"What made you think that?” she asked.

"Your mother was always telling me how you were always busy, and how you didn’t have time for me,” he said.

She looked at him with complete hatred in her eyes.

"I can't believe she would say that,” she told him.
