It was like having a bucket of water thrown on me; a bucket of ice water filled with pointy sharp push pins. I know I promised to give him a chance to explain and I try to remind myself of that. In the back of my mind, I hear Alera telling me to breathe, but it’s no use; I’ll give him the chance to explain once I stop hyperventilating.

Killian jumps up and runs around the table. Swinging my chair to the side, he crouches down and places his hand on the back of my neck, gently lowering my head between my knees. When I can finally breathe again, I slowly sit up trying not to look at him. Leaning forward, he places his head in my lap. “I am the KING of all asses,” he says.

After a few minutes, I give in and run my fingers through his hair. I feel all the tension leave him as his shoulders relax. Lifting his head, he takes my hands in his just as he did in the restaurant the other night. I’m half expecting the big kiss off; instead, he says “I’m not brushing you off. Donna, I want you to stay with me.”

I’m speechless. So many things swirl through my mind. As I try to grab on to a thought, it slides away.

“I ... I don’t know if I can,” I whisper. Disappointed, he breaks eye contact. “No, wait,” I say, placing my hand on his cheek and turning him to face me again. “It’s not what you think. When I put in for vacation I only put in through next Sunday.”

He’s silent for a moment, his eyes searching my face for what, I don’t know. “But if given the choice, you would stay?” he asks, his eyes boring into mine.

“Absolutely!”

Killian jumps up so fast, that if he hadn’t pulled me up with him, I’d have gone over along with the chair.

“Hey! Hey!” I yell, slapping at his arms. “Ease up or you’re going to break me in two!”

“Sorry,” he laughs and loosens his vice grip hug. “Got carried away, didn’t I?”

“A bit, yeah. Lucky, the broken ribs didn’t puncture anything vital.”

“Come on, let’s clear this away and get inside, it’s a bit cold out here this morning.”

Together we gather up the place settings and various plates of food. Setting everything on the trolley, Killian wheels it into the hallway while I put the juice in the fridge.

“So, what’s on the agenda for today?” he asks, sitting on the couch. “I’m thinking we still need to warm up, so I vote for a hot shower, followed by some time spent wrapped up in the quilt.”

“You, my dear,” I say leaning down to kiss him, “still need to go into the office.”

“Piece of piss!”

“What did you just call me?!”

“Oh sweetheart,” he laughs. “The look on your face ... priceless!”

When Killian heads into the office, I opt to not go with him. Flopping down on the couch, I start up my laptop and take out my phone.
