Among Yellow Garlands

Lullymore, Co. Kildare, Ireland

“Come on,” Sorcha said. “Let’s grab a coffee and go tramping again. I’ve got something on my mind I’d like to run by you.”

Máire nodded and rubbed her eyes. She was up early but looked like she hadn’t slept. Perhaps she was fretting over Dylan. Franya had returned to her old habit of drinking into the wee hours and slipping in and out of Sorcha’s bed just before she crashed. The sex was electric, and since she wasn’t ready for a full-on relationship so soon after losing Ruairí, she’d accepted the arrangement. It left her plenty of time to think, which is what she needed.

As they walked by the barn, Máire stopped to talk to the horses.

Declan, who was cleaning the stables, leaned on his shovel, and glanced over. “Going for a ride?”

“Oh, could we?” Máire’s eyes sparkled.

“Sure. The gray mare would suit you just fine.” He nodded to Sorcha. “Your wee pony could use some exercise too.”

Máire waved off the saddle but Sorcha was glad to have some padding between herself and Rowan. For a chubby pony, she had one heck of a hard backbone.

As they walked the horses up the path and through the field of yellow flowers, Sorcha swept her hand through the air. “This is what I want to talk to you about.”

Máire glanced around.

“These yellow flowers. You remember the lake of red trout where Ruairí and Conall built their hut? You brought the lads out there from your dad’s place.”

“Oh aye, it was beautiful and there were so many giolla rua.”

Sorcha’s mind drifted back to the night she’d fished out one of the red trout and they’d cooked it over the wood fire in the hut. That night they’d made love for the first time. She raised a hand and touched her heart. She’d do anything to be with Ruairí again. She’d even considered begging Cernunnos to take her back to that night in the hut. Knowing how it would end, perhaps she could change things.

Oh, but who was she kidding? Trying to change his fate was likely the reason he was dead. Her intrusion into their lives had altered history and sparked changes for all of them. Good and bad. She wondered how history would continue to change now that Máire and Conall were here in their world. Sorcha’s hand slipped to her belly. And what would Ruairí’s son bring to this world? Would he have gifts like his father?

Shaking free of her thoughts, she turned to Máire. “Did you know Ruairí had visions?”

“Oh aye, he was a seer. One of the best in the land.”

“When we were at the lake, Ruairí told me he had a vision of me. I was wearing my khakis and standing in a field of yellow flowers.”

Máire squinted, confused.

Sorcha pointed to her pants. “These are khakis. They’re the most comfortable piece of clothing I own. I wear them on digs for days and days. Sometimes I sleep in them.”

Máire nodded. “Farmer breeches.”

“Aye. Well, after we were here the other day, I started thinking about Ruairí’s vision.
