When Garrett woke, he found the bed empty. Jesse’s clothes were gone, too. He tried not to be too disappointed. He showered and dressed and, on his way back through the room, he cast a rueful glance at the bed. Ashlyn wasn’t due back for a couple of days, so he would have to replace the sheets himself. That could wait until later, though. He was hungry again and he had already used up most of the contents of the cupboards for the party and lunch. He would have to go purchase some supplies unless he intended to starve.

As he walked into the living area, he heard a sound from the study and realized he had been mistaken about Jesse’s departure. He entered the room to find Jesse sitting at his desk, reading his private papers. Whatever he was reading had him so engrossed he hadn’t even noticed Garrett appearing in the doorway. Anger shot through him at the sight of Jesse prying into his personal affairs.

“See something interesting?” Garrett asked.

Jesse jumped and dropped the paper he was holding. “Fuck, you scared me.”

“You didn’t answer my question,” Garrett replied. “Are you enjoying reading through my private correspondence?”

“I was just looking for something to write you a note on,” Jesse said.

“Really?” Garrett didn’t believe him. “The blank notebook right here on the desk wasn’t suitable?”

Jesse flushed.

Garrett approached him and snatched the correspondence from Jesse’s hands. “These are my private letters. You had no right to poke through them.”

“I was just curious about what kind of man you are.”

Garrett pushed the letters into the box, shoved the box back into the drawer and locked it. “Right now, I’m a pissed-off one. What exactly did you hope to find in my desk?”

“I don’t know. I was just looking.”

“Well, I suggest you look that way, toward the front door.”

“What?” Jesse appeared confused, though Garrett wasn’t sure why he wasn’t getting the message.

“Get out,” Garrett shouted. “And don’t expect another invitation here.”

Jesse stood and walked toward the door. “Will I see you again?” he asked.

“I don’t know. Right now I’m thinking no.”

Jesse nodded and left quietly.

As the door closed, Garrett’s anger left him. He sighed and sat down at his desk. At least he had left without causing a scene. How could he have been so foolish as to dream of a life with Jesse? He was nothing but a whore and a liar.
