Charlie waited for the bed to stop spinning as she lay on top of the sheets. Every time she closed her eyes, the gyroscope that was her picked up speed, and she worried she’d be flung off the bed from the centrifugal force. She snorted at the scientific reference, but it made her head hurt so the humour was lost.

She barely remembered the walk home other than having to step over the python that had stretched across the path. She was more than a little convinced the snake was a product of the wine anyway. It was probably a log. At least that’s what she kept telling herself.

What a lovely evening with Pip, though. The stories and laughter they shared were some of the best times she’d had in a while. No, it’d been a long time. A very long time.

Charlie sighed.

The spinning slowed to the point where she dared to close her eyes. She replayed some of the conversations with Pip. She was an amazing woman, hands down. It hurt her heart that people had been so cruel to her because of her illness.

The ticker tape in her head wound down to when she’d been about to leave. She’d only intended to kiss Pip on the cheek. But the combination of wine, the closeness they’d shared, and…Okay, now she was going to have to admit it. She was insanely attracted to Pip. She’d spent months wanting to only be left alone and to be alone. This couldn’t be a rebound relationship, could it? No. Pip had brought out a part of her that she hadn’t recognized until now. Faith and confidence in her own influence and ability in her personal life had been absent since her dad had died. Professionally, she had no issues with her job in the States. She was comfortable there. Having to become acquainted with and learn the ins and outs of a foreign land, however, had put personal and professional inadequacies on par with each other. Both as low as one could get.

Pip made her rise to the challenges of the work they did. She encouraged her to learn and love what she was doing. But would she have the courage to commit to loving a woman again? That was the part Charlie wasn’t sure of. Hell, she didn’t even know how Pip felt about her. I’m sure I shocked the living hell right out of her when I kissed her.

She could blame it on the wine, sure. But she couldn’t deny she was falling for an awfully cute Aussie with the sexiest accent ever. She just wasn’t sure what the morning would bring and what Pip would say, if anything. So like the fate of all the animals they rescued, what Pip did with the love she had to offer was all to be determined.
