Chapter Eleven

DEREK had done it. The big IT. With a man he got to call his boyfriend. After getting rid of the condom and cleaning them, Flynn dropped onto the bed beside Derek and promptly fell asleep.

Derek tried, but once the relaxing pleasure was over, he was left with some slight pain and a whole mess of thoughts because he had had anal sex. The memory of Flynn’s touch, the lustful look in his eyes, all of it was vivid and enough to make Derek start to get hard again. He was torn between wanting to turn his back to Flynn so he didn’t accidentally feel it in his sleep, and staying where he was so he could watch Flynn sleep.

In the end insomnia won out, and Derek eased his way out of the bed. He made sure the blanket covered Flynn before running his fingers through Flynn’s soft hair. He looked peaceful and perfect. Derek thought about trying to wake him with a kiss, but making the rest of the fudge would be easier if Flynn wasn’t hovering and almost getting in the way. Derek tugged on his jeans and went out to the kitchen.

Apparently hearing holiday music all the time at work didn’t dampen the need to play it while making fudge. Derek was halfway into melting the next batch when he wished he had his mom’s cookie recipes too. He sort of missed the act of making everything together. Family tradition was to set aside the first weekend of December as cookie-baking and candy-making weekend. That fell apart Derek’s junior year of high school when he worked the holiday season at the Christmas tree farm.

He sort of missed having a tree and decorating it too. Mom had tried to make him stick around at Thanksgiving for the traditional postmeal decorating, but he had work, and there was no way to wiggle out of it. He wasn’t sure he missed the act of celebrating with his family or having the familiar holiday icon around. Possibly both, which was weird. As much as his family frustrated him, he wasn’t sure he’d ever missed them before.

Flynn didn’t have a tree yet. Maybe he could convince him to buy one or split the cost or something. Not that there were any guarantees they were still going to be a couple through the holidays. Trees could get expensive, and Derek doubted Flynn had any decorations. They could make some.

God, he was such a dork, thinking like this about a guy he’d barely started seeing. But there was something about Flynn. Something comfortable, like reading a favorite book for the tenth time or settling in with coffee and video games during a snowstorm. He was a calm, easygoing constant.

Whereas Derek was a hot mess currently making a hot mess. He managed to get the fudge into the pan barely in the nick of time.

That was when he spotted the corner bit of chocolate missing out of the first pan. More glitter surrounded the corner and coated the counter beside it.
