“For the fifteenth time, I’ve told you everything I know.” Tom slammed his now cold coffee on the table. “Four guys, one tall, one short, pulled up in a dark panel van, make and license number unknown, grabbed my assistant, and took off.”

The older detective, Werner, hitched forward in his chair and eyed the connecting door. “And this woman…” He glanced at his notes as if he didn’t already know the answer. “Fiona Drake. She was your assistant?”

“She is my assistant.” Why were they spending time talking when they should be searching?

“Then why is she registered as Louise Spellman?”

Not again. He dropped his head into his hands.

“Are you married, Mr. Meyers?”

“No.”

“Is Miss Drake?”

“No. Neither of us is married. She is my associate. We are here on business. She was assaulted last night and I thought she might be safer using another name until I could get here to protect her.”

Phelps, an obvious rookie, flicked his wrist and expanded Tom’s baton to its full twenty-six inches then parried it like a light saber, making Star Wars sounds under his breath. “And this is what you brought to protect her with?”

“Is that even legal, Mr. Meyers? Where would you buy a thing like that? It could be dangerous.”

Of course it was dangerous. Why else would he have brought it? Two detectives. One too old to care. One too young to know better. Showed where Fiona’s abduction ranked with the Baton Rouge police department.

Werner took the baton from his partner. “I’ll tell you what I think, Mr. Meyers. You and your secretary came here, across the state line—”

“To Louisiana where people like you think anything is allowed,” Phelps interrupted.

“For privacy to engage in a little hanky spanky.” Werner waved the baton around. “Things got a bit too rough for Miss Drake and she lit out. Now you don’t know where she is and you’re worried she might cause a stink so you call us and invent this fairytale about a mysterious van and four imaginary shadow people.”

“Five people. One was driving.”

Phelps stood over him, glaring down. “Perhaps we have it wrong. Maybe you didn’t come here together. She got here first and checked in under a fake name. Her van had a tracking device underneath.”

So that’s how the bastards found us.

“I mean, you did come prepared with a deadly weapon.” Phelps nodded toward his baton.

“That’s not a deadly weapon. It’s a baton I use in my katas.” Both of the detective’s faces were blank. “Practice moves. I had forgotten it in the car the last time I went to my dojo. I grabbed it when I heard Fiona scream.” Screw the truth. Those guys didn’t deserve it and would use it against him if he told them.

“Was she hiding from you, Mr. Meyers? Were your attentions unwelcome? You are the one with the black eye, yet you claim to be some type of martial arts expert.”

He didn’t claim to be anything. Shorin Ryu was developed for self-defense. He used it for exercise and to relieve stress.
