Timber

The anger in Caelan’s eyes as she gets the first aid kit open on the bathroom counter actually has me a little worried. This isn’t the first time she’s had that glare storming through her gaze, and usually, it’s the precursor to me getting my ass chewed out. The last time was after Faylinn came home and I got in the fight pit. She cried over me getting hurt, then spent five days telling me how fucking pissed she was and refusing to even let me kiss her until I pulled my head out of my ass.

“Take your shirt off,” she snaps, stopping at my side and putting her hands on her hips.

“If you want me to get naked, babe, you don’t have to be so bossy about it,” I say as I pull my shirt over my head. I don’t know why she’s making a big deal about a graze. It really doesn’t even hurt that bad, and I’ve had way worse since I became Shamrock’s Enforcer.

“Keep being sarcastic and we will both be keeping our clothes on for the next month,” she says, pinning me with a death glare.

“You wouldn’t deny me sex over the Christmas holiday, would you?” I ask with mock horror in my tone.

Caelan drops her arms, her eyes going wide, her face blank. “Huh?”

Reaching out and taking her hand, I pull her over to me, wrapping my arms around her waist. “Tomorrow’s Christmas Eve, love. I know we can’t celebrate it like normal given the circumstances, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to at least acknowledge the holiday with you.”

“I, uh, didn’t even realize the date, to be honest,” she says, softly pushing out of my embrace. “Now, hold your arm up so I can clean and bandage that.”

Doing as she says, she uses alcohol to clean my side and get all the blood off my skin. It stings like a bitch, but I don’t let her know that. After she puts antibiotic cream on it and a bandage, she starts throwing away the trash and putting the kit away.

“Caelan,” I say sternly when I realize how quiet she’s gone, “I’m fine. I know this sucks, but this isn’t the first time I’ve gotten hurt, and given who I am, it won’t be the last.”

Spinning around, she presses her lips into a thin line, her eyes flashing in the florescent lights. “What, so that means it isn’t supposed to bother me? That I’m supposed to just shrug off the man I love getting beat up or shot, or whatever? I don’t know how I reacted to this shit before, but you better get used to this being how I’m going to react now. I’m not going to pretend like it doesn’t bother me, Dermot. You want me to deal with this part of you, well, that goes both ways. If you get hurt, you get to deal with all of the emotions that come with that.”

Sighing, I push off the counter and go over to her as the first few tears fall down her cheeks.
