Chapter Seventeen

The email from Calvin had Sami worried. A “simple” project? No project was simple if it involved a child. And what about the research? Sami, even if not involved directly, always had input, usually long telephone discussions with Roland and assignments from him which could range from computer searches, through hiring local private detectives, to physically scoping out a locale herself. She’d heard nothing about this project when it had been first received, definitely not the way Roland would normally handle it – Roland was a boss who always discussed potential projects with the team. She remembered when he was talking about the possible upcoming projects the last time they saw him in Scotland. Two projects he was happy about, and one he was dismissing. Surely this wasn’t the one he was going to dismiss? Sami emailed back her concerns to Calvin, expressing her dismay at the apparent haste. And the quantity of projects on their books. And how people were becoming tired – and tired accomplices meant danger. And Roland would never put a gig in jeopardy, not the accomplices, never a child.

Calvin wrote back that he was given authority by Roland while he was indisposed and these were his, Calvin’s, decisions. The team had to become more efficient. They were not a charity and Sami was required to fulfil her duties or be replaced.

Sami was more than affronted. She had worked closely with Roland for several years now with nothing but easy relations between them. She had dismissed Fliss’s concerns, explaining the conflict to herself as either due to Fliss’s fatigue or an interpersonal conflict between the two of them – dismissed without thinking it through – especially now she was on the receiving end. She tried to recall what Fliss had said.

Two gigs using the same accomplices; that was one complaint. Sending Fliss on both gigs when she was due a much needed break; that was another. Something about not being able to make any sort of contact with Roland – but that could be explained by his health problems. And his hiring someone as his assistant whom nobody knew … and somebody so under the radar, he was not available on a Google search. Heavens, they all had done extraordinary things that were public knowledge – Fliss had been a gymnast of some repute, to the point of being on the British Team for the Commonwealth Games until an injury had intervened. Sami herself had also been an athlete, javelin throwing, having done well in Australasia. Alain had been a vet for the equestrian team – the same team that both Roland and Hazel had been on. And so on. They had all made their mark. But who was Calvin Read and where had he been before turning up as their boss in KT?

Sami sighed and studied the downloaded document about the new project. No, it couldn’t be the gig Roland had dismissed. Could it? This situation was acute. Sami hated last minute gigs; they all did but especially Roland.
