I didn’t tell Mom I was planning to break up with Millie, mainly because I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off.

But I told Dr. Gladstone, and he laughed.

“What’s so funny?” I asked.

“Nothing,” he said, covering his mouth.

“But you were laughing.”

“Was I? I’m sorry. I was thinking about the tv interview.”

“So, what should I tell her?”

“Who?”

“Millie.”

“Well, I’m not sure. What do you want to tell her?”

“That I want to break up with her.”

“Then that’s what you should tell her.”

“But what if she doesn’t accept it?”

“Well, you have to be assertive.”

“That doesn’t work with Millie.”

“You either have to break off the relationship or stay with the relationship. Those are the two options.”

“But you don’t know her like I do. You don’t know what she’s capable of.”

“If she’s human I do. Take control, Grip. It’s your life.” He paused for a second. “Isn’t it?”

I thought about it.

“Well, is it or isn’t it?”

“Yes,” I said, feeling a new resolve. I sprang from my chair and actually saluted. Don’t ask me why. I’ve never been in the military or even the Boy Scouts. But I felt a sense of duty that I can’t even begin to describe. “I can do it,” I said.

I was even more surprised when Dr. Gladstone returned the salute. “Congratulations,” he said. “That’s the first step on your thousand-mile journey.” He materialized a Jelly Belly from God knows where and popped it into his mouth. “Good for you.”

“I’m going to call her right now.”

“Be gentle,” he said. “Gentle but firm.”

Yes.

Gentle but firm.

Gentle but firm.
