Three’s No Crowd: Business or Pleasure?

When I got into the office, there was a maelstrom of gossip. I tried my best to ignore most of it. Most of the time people were wrong, and I didn’t want to get my hopes up for nothing. One of my colleagues, Melanie, didn’t feel the same way though.

“Hey Norah,” she chirped, leaning against my desk. Melanie was a willowy blonde mysteriously knew almost everything about everyone.

“Morning,” I replied, and pointed at my screen. “I’ve got a big merger here that has to be done in an hour Melanie.”

“Right, but aren’t you excited to hear about the big announcement? They say that Jacob Bentworth has singled you out for consideration.”

Jacob Bentworth was the founding partner of this firm, along with George Wexler. The two of them met at Harvard, and became inseparable, almost like brothers , it was said. Some (Melanie of course,) even said that they liked to share the same woman now and then. They were both handsome as hell too, and relatively young for to have founded such a successful company. Word is that they’re both billionaire trust fund babies, who lived for the thrill of a sale. It seemed to baffle people why they would work when they didn’t need to, but secretly I understood.

Naturally, I had a crush on them. I’d only seen them once, from afar. It was a celebratory gala held at the Met for achieving some new astronomical sum of success. Jacob was dark haired and swarthy, with a perpetual smile on his squared-jaw features. George on the other hand, was taller, with light, curly hair, pale skin, and a serious expression. They looked like complete opposites in every sense of the word.

“That’s just water cooler talk Melanie. We all know that they keep these things under wraps. I’ve never even seen Jacob Bentworth, so how could he know who I was?”

“I know what I heard,” Melanie insisted. “And you’re the one. You should be happy about this!”

“Yes, yes,” I said, trying to move her along. “Now please, let me get some work done!”

She huffed a little, but went on her way, no doubt to spread some more gossip around the office. Sometimes I wondered if she really worked here. Nobody was ever really sure which department she belonged in, nor who she had worked with.

Shaking my head, I dived back into my work. There was still a lot to do, and I didn’t want to be seen slacking when my name got called. Secretly, I also knew I was to be made partner, and not because of Melanie.

You see, I had gotten an email last night from Jacob Bentworth himself asking me to stay late tonight for a private meeting with him and George Wexler. I mean, what else could it have been for right? Understandably, he asked me not to speak of the meeting, which I agreed to (except for my mom, but who doesn’t do that?).

I stayed at my desk until 6:30. It was a Friday, which meant that everyone had bolted at 5 on the dot.
