Chapter 38

“You have some weird friends, Tommy Wilde,” Barbie said for the second time. He grunted as he adjusted his grip on the underside of the chest freezer.

Tommy didn’t know Barbie’s friends, or if the man had any, but judging by his appearance, the name ‘Barbie’, and his other unique qualities, he supposed that if they existed, they were likely as strange as him.

“I guess I do,” Tommy conceded.

Barbie chuckled, revealing his spaced teeth.

Yeah, they’re fucking weird.

Together they managed to finagle the freezer up the stairs and into the main hallway, using some lifting straps that Tommy had lying around as well as a couple of two-by-fours. Tommy knew that Barbie wouldn’t ask about why the thing was so damn heavy, and the man didn’t disappoint. He kept his questions to himself.

Tommy didn’t know much about the enigmatic man, but he was a worker, that much was clear. Give him a task and set him to it; he’d get shit done.

After a short break to collect what little remained of their strength, the duo moved the freezer into the garage. Tommy placed the two two-by-fours out of the back of the van as a makeshift ramp, then used the lifting straps to drag it up and inside, while Barbie made sure the wood didn’t shift.

It was exhausting, and when he’d finally succeeded, Tommy collapsed, breathing heavily, sweat pouring off him.

Barbie lit up a cigarette but thankfully blew the smoke out of the garage.

Why couldn’t you weigh thirty pounds less, Marv?

“Maybe Bobby’s right. Maybe I should hit the gym.”

“Maybe he should hit gym, that fat fuck,” Barbie hollered from outside the van.

Tommy laughed, his eyes bouncing from the Pill Maker 2000 on one side of him to the freezer on the other.

This life I’m living… it’s ridiculous. Just pure crazy town.

It took longer this time for Tommy to regain his strength. Five minutes passed, six, seven. At some point, Tommy realized that if he didn’t get up now, he might pass out right here in the back of his work van.

And sleeping next to a frozen corpse was never a good idea.

With a loud groan, he rose, got out of the truck, and then walked to the driver side door. Barbie was staring off into space, smoking another cigarette.

“One more job, man,” he said with a sigh. “One more thing to do.”

Barbie flicked his cigarette and waited for Tommy to pull up before closing the garage door and then getting into the van.

They drove in silence all the way to the apartment job that Alma had given Wilde Clean-up. Tommy was surprised that Dustin’s white van was still in the parking lot. He was even more taken aback by the fact that Dustin was sitting in the back, his legs over the edge, a half-eaten sandwich in his hands.

Tommy parked next to the van and got out. Truthfully, he didn’t want to speak to the man; all he wanted were the keys, as sad as that was.

After all, when Tommy passed out and slept for three whole days, Dustin had been the one who had come looking for him.
