Chapter Nine
The day brings some good news. Hadley and I head for the hospital to see Katherine. She is doing better, and memories of the incident are returning. She can give a fairly good description of the attacker, and it’s not Wilkes whom we brought in earlier.
She also describes the chilling moments when he forced her to call 911 and then opened fire the moment the police arrived. This man wasn’t targeting her alone—he had an agenda to kill people that day.
“I didn’t know what to do,” she says, crying. “I didn’t want for any of this to happen.”
“Cary Wilkes says that he came to your house that day, but turned away when he heard you talking to another man. That man you described had his gun. Do you have any idea how this could have happened? Anyone who had access?”
“If Cary can’t answer that question, I don’t know how I could. One of his crazy friends? I don’t know, he never introduced me to the people he went drinking with.”
“Do you know where he went?”
“I’m not sure, pubs in the area. Mickey’s, maybe.”
Once upon a time I might have had a snarky thought about what women in straight relationships put up with even when they can make other choices—Katherine eventually did—but then I’m reminded that Adrianne and I haven’t really talked in days, and that I kissed another woman last night.
Who can you trust?
I drive by Wilkes’ house on the way back to the station. He isn’t happy to see me. I didn’t expect him to be.
“I thought I was cleared,” he grumbles. “Someone is trying to set me up. I hope you won’t waste your time hanging around here, and find that person.”
“You seem very sure of that theory.” We are still standing on the porch—he’s not going to ask me inside. “Is there anyone you got into a fight with lately, who might have an interest in letting you be the fall guy?”
“I have no idea. That’s your job, lady.”
“So there were no altercations with friends, or strangers? After a few beers maybe?”
He shakes his head. “You must be desperate. I don’t care, but stop harassing me, or I’ll get my lawyer. It’s about time that man-hating dykes are put in their place.”
“Thank you for your time, Mr. Wilkes,” I say. I should be surprised, but I’m not, not any longer. “Just one more question. Mickey’s is a place you like to go?”
“One word of friendly advice. I wouldn’t go if I were you. It’s a bunch of honest guys having drinks in peace. They won’t like you.”
“That’s helpful,” I say. I don’t think he got the sarcasm. Guys like him never do. “Have a nice day.”
I’ve been to Mickey’s a few times, sometimes with male company, sometimes without, more often than not because of the job. I catch myself straightening, being a little more aware of the gun I’m carrying.
The patrons unabashedly stare, and for a moment, I wonder if they’ve always done that, or if
