“Why would you even speak to her, let alone still love her,” Kierre fired at her father as he sat and they finally dealt with all the revelations presented by her grandmother. “Because I loved her,” Kavin returned plainly. “I can’t help how I felt Kierre, I don’t apologize for it, I just hate that you got hurt in the process,” he added as she sighed. Kierre had learned that all the things her mother told her growing up about her father were lies. He hadn’t raped her and impregnated her. Shareema and Kavin had been dating for three years before she got pregnant. Of course Kavin wanted to marry her, with her agreeing. They were married two months before Kierre was born. Her childhood had been perfectly normal with her parents being together and them living like other families with her grandmother LilyDale, up until her twelfth birthday. Suddenly her father disappeared from her life without explanation and they moved from her grandmother’s home into an apartment with Rae.

“This is my girlfriend,” Shareema told her as Kierre frowned in confusion. “But what about daddy,” she questioned as Rae calmly looked her over. “He left us, and he ain’t coming back,” Shareema fired. “Get over it,” she added without further explanation turning and striding from the room. Rae had been exceptionally nice to her Kierre recalled; now knowing she was only laying the foundation for the sexual abuse that would come later. Kierre sighed deeply at the memories, tears rolling down her cheeks again. The days that had passed between her gaining the knowledge and processing it hadn’t eased the pain of her discovery one bit. Shareema told her lie after lie about Kavin slowly turning her heart into stone toward her father. “Why were you in prison daddy,” Kierre questioned breaking her silence again. “I was convicted of raping your mother while we were married,” he told her as Kierre’s mouth dropped. “What the hell, you can’t rape your own damned wife,” she fired angrily. Kavin chuckled dryly before enlightening her of the law. “So they gave me five years,” he told her. “I spent two and a half years in that hell before your mother finally told the truth, not that it helped, I was up for parole anyway,” Kavin spoke. “But why daddy, why would she do that,” Kierre was desperately trying to understand. He took another breath and gathered his thought before trying to make his daughter understand the complicated relationship between himself and Shareema.

“Your mother was an addict,” he told her as Kierre nodded. She knew that much. Shareema spent more time high on crack than she did sober. Rae was the one who kept a roof over their head and food on the table. “She wasn’t always though,” he defended, as Kierre again nodded but remained silent. “Shareema hooked up with Rae because of dope Kierre,” Kavin spoke tightly. “She was her supplier and she seduced her with dope out of our house and into her bed,” he fired, jaw set.
