BEJEWELED

As scary as it was to come face-to-face with those killers that they had heard so much about, the pair’s arrival did provide an ample distraction. The presence of Oe Nissho as a guard all but confirmed that the Sacred Jewel was indeed in the location that many thought it was. They needed to get inside, get the jewel, and get out before the former sumo wrestler or the two men with knives could stop them.

While both of their potential obstacles were too busy starting to fight each other, they hurried over to Three Palace Sanctuaries and split up to break into them. Elijah took one. Enzo took another. Sam and Hiro took the third. Hiro felt bad trespassing in a place like that but they needed to find the jewel and didn’t have much time to do it. Either the sumo champion guarding them would come or the two assassins that also wanted to steal them would come. Either way, both of those parties would try to stop them from getting it.

They rifled through all of the dusty things inside the shrine until Hiro found a stone chest and pried the top of it off. He found a small ornate wooden box inside and pulled it out. It looked like it was something that was treated with a lot of reverence. There was not a single mark on it, not even a scratch. He popped open the box and knew that what was inside was exactly what he was looking for.

The gem inside of the box was small and green, glimmering in the glow of their flashlights. It had to be the right one. Just holding it made Hiro so sure of that. There was no mistake that it was one of the Three Sacred Treasures. It was Yasakani no Magatama, the Sacred Jewel. He lifted it up to get a better look at it, and that apparently caught Sam’s attention as he hurried over.

“Is that the jewel?” Sam asked, looking hopeful but a little nervous. He looked over his shoulder like he was waiting for Akumu, Jashin, or Zoe to bust in and try to stop them. “Please tell me it is.”

Hiro flashed him a smile. “It is.”

“Great, so let’s get the hell out of here.”

He was right, of course. They needed to take that jewel far away from the Visionaries and even away from its usual protectors. The Order of the Black Sun were really the only people that could keep it safe. Despite how big of a fan of Oe Nissho he was, Hiro was going to have to let him down. He would have to find a new job since there would be nothing left to guard.

They let Elijah and Enzo know that they found it and then looked over at the fight that was still happening nearby. Oe was holding his own thanks to the strengths he had that his enemies didn’t. Their knives sunk into him but weren’t doing as much damage as they might on other people.
