TWELVE

Of course, some of those tourists turned out to be media sharks, and they called the Daily News and the Post and anybody else they could think of, and pictures of all of us horsing around in Times Square made it into a half-dozen newspapers and onto TV talk shows. Sam hadn’t been around for the fun, but they called him for a comment about the billboard, which he described as “truly one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in my entire life,” so that quote from our movie-star playwright made it into the articles too. In short, we were all over the newspapers for a couple days, and by the end of the week, the entire six-week run of our not-so-good play was completely sold out. So then they added a three-week extension, and that sold out too before we had even started previews, and before any critics had gotten anywhere near the show to tell everybody whether it was any good or not.

So the people who ran that theater were pretty pleased with me, and all those actors I was now hanging out with thought this was a sensational development as well. Each and every one of them hated the critics like crazy; they just thought they were the dumbest and most hideous creeps on the planet. But now it didn’t matter what the critics thought about us, because there was a billboard of me in Times Square, so our show was suddenly so famous it didn’t matter; we were a hit even if they hated us. So everyone was in a pretty good mood about that, and people seemed to care less that I was still pretty much stinking up the room whenever I tried to act. And since they were all a little more relaxed about it, then I loosened up too, and then I was maybe only seventy percent awful, instead of being really just a hundred percent unforgivably bad.

And I have to say, for the record? Even being a bad actress was totally a gas. People maybe think they want to be actors because they think it might be fun to be famous and have everybody watch you and pay you a lot of money and then suck up to you all the time, but I had all that when I was modeling, and it wasn’t all that much fun. Acting, real acting, like in a theater? That was fun. I’m still not sure why. Maybe it’s because you get to be somebody else who is actually having an interesting life, instead of being yourself, having the life you are having. I mean, I’m not saying that I was not having an interesting life; obviously my life is pretty fucking fascinating or I wouldn’t be asked to run through all this for you. I would have to say that objectively my relatively short life has not exactly been dull. But there was something that was just such a relief, frankly, about not being me, about being somebody else.
