Chapter Seventeen

Detective Hughes (2023)

After searching Tate’s room, I’ve never felt more motivated. As scared as I am to find out what happened to my sweet girl, I know that I have the perfect opportunity for revenge and justice.

I reviewed all of Lauren and Will’s messages, or should I say Will’s messages. She had never replied to him, and he had attempted to message her from multiple accounts, in which she blocked them all. I run a search on Will Roberts in our database. He surprisingly has a clean record.

Sanchez appears at my desk unexpectedly. “Boss,” he says, rubbing his stubble across his jawline, “We haven’t been able to track down Will Roberts. But we did find his address. We went this morning, but no one was home. Looking through the windows, the house was immaculate, but it doesn’t look lived in. His mother’s name is Anna, but she lives somewhere closer to town. Do you want to go talk to her?”

I’m listening to him but it’s like I’m not really there. I stare blankly at the computer screen. “Hello? Anyone home?” he asks, snapping his fingers at me. “Are you okay? I’m worried about you. Look, if you need some time away from this case, I’m sure we could reassign-”

“No,” I spat at him. I refocus, looking from the computer to him and force a smile. “I mean, no that’s not necessary. Yes, I will go talk to the mother. Just leave me her information.”

He has a look of question and concern smeared across his face, but he doesn’t say anything further. He leaves me with a single piece of paper with his mother’s information on it: Anna Roberts.

I couldn’t tell anyone about the note I found in Tate’s room. I showed them the journal entry, but the other felt personal. It was specifically for me, that was clear. If they knew about the note, they would for sure reassign me and I’d probably be in some deep shit. I decide to keep it to myself because I want to be the one that takes this guy down.

I begin to think- how the hell is Will Roberts connected with my daughter? I’ve never heard of this boy until now. Would he have taken my daughter just for the fun of it? And now, decided to make a game out of girls who had stood him up? Embarrassed him? Didn’t want him?

I shudder at the thought. I peer at the address typed across the page and head toward my car.

I appear at a small, light blue sided house in town. The yard is so small there is barely a driveway, so I park on the curb. I adjust my badge and taser and walk toward the porch.

I glance at my watch, it’s 7 P.M.; Most people should be home from work by this point. I knock at the door and nearly immediately, someone answers. A warm smile dances over her face. She’s a shorter woman, small build. You can tell she is Will’s mother by the pictures I’ve seen.
