MEDITATION 1: PEACE IN THE HEART

Mantra: MAY THERE BE PEACE IN MY HEART, MAY THERE BE PEACE IN THE WORLD.

Sit comfortably. Set a timer for five to twenty minutes. Lengthen your spine and relax your shoulders. Imagine your spine is a strong pillar. Lean back slightly and feel the support of the pillar. Bring your attention to your heart area. Inhale, and as you exhale, feel your heart soften while keeping it lifted. Inhale again, and as you exhale, silently repeat the mantra, MAY THERE BE PEACE IN MY HEART. Inhale, and with each exhale, feel a softening in your heart as you repeat, MAY THERE BE PEACE IN MY HEART. Thoughts that are not peaceful may come into your awareness, but keep your attention on your breath. MAY THERE BE PEACE IN MY HEART.

After about two minutes, or when the peaceful feeling is established, switch the mantra to the inhalation, MAY THERE BE PEACE IN MY HEART, and as you exhale, add the mantra, MAY THERE BE PEACE IN THE WORLD. Inhale, MAY THERE BE PEACE IN MY HEART; exhale, MAY THERE BE PEACE IN THE WORLD. Continue; as you exhale, actually feel the peaceful energy as it flows from your heart out into the world. You are sending peaceful energy with your exhalation. Breathe in and feel peace expanding your own heart, then breathe out and share it with the world. Inhale, MAY THERE BE PEACE IN MY HEART; exhale, MAY THERE BE PEACE IN THE WORLD. Afterward, notice the effects of this meditation in your body and mind.
