Saccharin and Cyclamate

Saccharin was the first artificial sweetener in history. It was discovered accidentally in 1879 when a dangerous poison, toluene, was studied. One of the researchers forgot to wash his hands, touch the poison, and when he ate food that had touched his contaminated hands, he tasted something sweet. In 1884 commercial production of saccharin began. In 1912 saccharin was banned due to significant suspicion that it causes severe health problems. However, in 1914 saccharin was allowed on the shelves again due to a sugar shortage during World War I.

Cyclamate was discovered in 1937 in similar circumstances. A young researcher working on a fever reducing medicine tasted something sweet on his fingers. Cyclamate was popular until 1970, when studies indicated that it becomes highly carcinogenic in the digestive system. Mice and rats developed malignant tumors in their bladders due to consumption of cyclamate[97]. Following these findings, cyclamate was banned in the U.S., but is still allowed in many other countries.

The serious findings regarding cyclamate caused an examination of the safety of saccharin, and results appeared quickly. A 1970 study found that 50% of lab animals that were fed saccharin developed bladder cancer[98]. Canada, in which the first study on saccharin was conducted, immediately banned it. The FDA conducted its own study, achieved similar findings, and in 1977 banned saccharin. This was met with widespread public opposition, because at the time saccharin was the only artificial sweetener permitted for sale in the U.S. Congress interfered and the ban was blocked, but a label was placed on the packaging warning that saccharin has been found to cause cancer in lab animals. In 2000, the law requiring the label was repealed.
