CHAPTER 8

“How are you doing over here?”

I’m sitting on the grass toward the back of the Outdoor Stage, half listening to Future|Future, a female hip-hop duo, and trying to decompress from this nightmare day, but now Jay stands next to me, blocking the sun with his shadow.

I give him a half-hearted smile. “Eh.”

“Do you mind if I join you? I’m feeling a little ‘eh’ myself.”

I shrug and pat the grass next to me. Jay lowers himself, crossing his legs.

“Where’s your brother?” he asks.

I nod to the left, where Jordan sits with Sadie, deep in conversation about something or other; it’s like they don’t even realize Future|Future is onstage fifty yards in front of them.

“Where’s yours?”

“Who cares.” He rolls his eyes. “I’m sorry about earlier.”

I give him another half smile. “Thanks for the apology,” I say. “But there’s no need. You guys won fair and square. Nothing to be sorry for.”

“I know.” He lets out a long sigh. “I’m sorry about Dev, like, in general, though. I’ve been wanting to talk to you about him, but I haven’t really had a chance.”

“What is there to say?” I reach in front of my legs and start picking blades of grass and shredding them.

“That my brother has always been a jerk. That’s just how he is. To everyone. It’s not only to you. It’s to me and to literally everyone we meet. Always.”

“Aw, and I thought I was special.”

He laughs. “But this is what I wanted to tell you yesterday. My brother, he writes all my videos. The person I am on those videos, I’m reading a script that he writes. What you see on the screen is his personality, not mine.”

This is certainly in line with what I’ve learned about both Jay and Dev over the course of the weekend so far, and what I’ve seen when Jay is on camera. But, still. “Why? I don’t get it.”

He nods toward Future|Future on the stage. “Do you like them?”

“They’re okay. I like their song that’s on the radio right now, but I don’t know too much about their other stuff.”

“Want to go for a walk?”

“Why not?”

Jay hops up, then reaches out his hand to help me up. I consider taking it, but instead I push myself off the grass and brush off the back of my shorts. “Let me tell my brother where I’m going.”

Jordan looks up as I approach and shoots me a back-off-I’m-busy look, which I immediately dismiss with a head shake.

“I’m going for a walk with Jay. Text me if you need anything or go anywhere.”

“Okay, I will. Be back for Tarot Card.”

“I will. And I know you won’t text me.” I kick him lightly on his leg. “But I need to say it anyway.”

“I’ll make sure he does,” Sadie says, smiling up at me. Then she turns to my brother, her eyes narrowed, and shoves him playfully on the shoulder. “Why wouldn’t you let your sister know where you are? That’s rude.”

“Thanks for looking out, Sadie. See you later.”

Jay and I wander off into the festival, not really sure where we’re going.
