Chapter Three

“Just hear those sleigh bells jingling, ring-ting-tingling, too…” Oh yeah, the season was here and even though we hadn’t yet celebrated Thanksgiving it was hard to find a radio station that wasn’t broadcasting about the hap-happiest time of the year. I have to admit I didn’t feel the pressure as much as I had the year before while trying to fill Oliver’s Christmas list and not bankrupting myself.

Matt had told me he was visiting his parents in Sacramento for Christmas and I was seeing my folks in Pasadena for Thanksgiving. We had agreed it was too soon in our relationship for the meeting of the families although I knew I’d miss him on both occasions. Gordon didn’t have a family, or rather one he was on loving terms with, so he was coming with me to my parents’ house for Thanksgiving. This had been an annual event ever since Gordon’s folks had thrown him to the curb when he came out to them. He hadn’t seen them since he was fifteen and my mom and dad had more or less taken their place, showing him the love and support a teenager needed when being abandoned by unloving parents. How his own parents couldn’t see him for the sweet guy I knew him to be, was beyond my understanding. Guess some people just shouldn’t have kids if they’re not prepared to love them unconditionally.

Ever since that night at The Rise when Matt and I had first met, we’d been almost inseparable. He’d fitted right in to my little social circle and so it was either we’d make dinner for each other or go out with Gordon, Spencer and Ron. He’d introduced me to a couple of his friends, Jake and Mike and we’d gotten together a couple of times for drinks or dinner. Life was good and I was happier than I’d been in a long time. How could I not be? I had a handsome caring boyfriend who couldn’t keep his hands to himself whenever we were together, and friends I could depend on, so this year the season definitely looked bright.
